How Do I Set Up a Printer for Wireless Printing

I think I'm a dunce. I should have started from the very basic beginning and I assumed that you had.
I will explain. When I was shadowing previously I was using a 5 year old HP desktop which was one of the first I had networked and so had been networked for years. Last fall, I built a new machine and it is a multi-boot and I usually boot into Vista, so most evenings I have both on, but both have been networked for a long time. Last night I was going to update a Media Center that is usually in the living room and not connected to the network, so I removed the XP desktop and put the Media Center with Vista in its place.
So with Vista on the MC, I booted my newer machine into the XP installation and went into Windows Explorer. When I attempted to right click on a folder to activate shareing I got the message that network access was disabled and I needed to run Network Setup Wizard. When attaching a machine to a network, this Wizard needs to be run, but does not have to be run to access the Internet.
Since you previously had the desktop attached to the router for Internet access, I assumed that you had run the Network Setup Wizard, but you had no reason to do so as it was not needed as a solo machine. However, once you added the lappy, in order for each machine to access and share to the other, the Network Setup Wizard needs to be run on both machines. Part of the wizard is to authorize Printer and File sharing.
Please go through the Network Setup Wizard on the XP machine. If you already have, please do so again.

Vista sets up a little differently, click Start -> Network and this opens a large windows with the status of the network at the top. Now, since you connected to the router wirelessly, you probably went through this, but it would help to review. The individual items you go through in the XP wizard are all in the middle in the Sharing and Discovery section. Here is mine:

The last time I posted one of these I was on a wired machine, obviously this machine has a wireless connection.

You guys have been working on this for days with no solution. Rgreen is correct, on the Vista Machine if you give the correct permissions it should work. On the Vista Machine you install a Network Printer, and if your Network is set up properly when you Browse for a Printer you should see your HP. So your Network should be set up with a Network Name, I don't like WorkGroup so if you live in Los Angeles I would call it LAHOME. Then your computers should have unique names, your XP Desktop I like first initial and last name if your name is John Smith it would be JSMITH, and your Laptop maybe JOHNLAP. Now restart the computers and you should be able to find them on the Network easily.

Alright, I can now folder share! And I can find the printer that I want to print to, but it is still not working. Last night, it said it needed to install drivers, so I clicked install, and then nothing happened, maybe it was in the system tray. Turned off the computer for the night, (forgetting that the drivers may have been download/installing...)and this morning I go to set up the printer and I get an error code like this below. Is their somewhere I can check to see if the drivers got installed, or try redownloading them again?

Alchav21 - Glad to have another pair of eyes looking at this. The workgroup name is interesting. Mine since it started as the XP default (MSHOME) that it has stayed. I may consider changing, but not right now that I have several active PC's and printers. Not all the printers in my posting are active any longer, in fact the shared printers are physically in the closet as I have gone to direct attached and wireless as I have upgraded. Then I don't have to leave a PC on.

I just like to personalize things, it makes it easier to identify and adds uniformity. I retired from PacBell and then did some Contracting working on Phones and Networks in the Silicone Valley, so I have taken some of that experience and incorporated into my own. I have Ethernet throughout my house that I installed 8 years ago when I bought it, and have two computers with a Server, and also my Entertainment Center. So I can stream Pictures and Video with no problem. My Printer is a stand alone Canon attached to a Print Server that serves my Network.

I googled the error code and it took me to Microsoft's Technet and a thread with a similar problem. One of the responses is copied below. The full discussion is fairly long, three pages on the site and stretching from Jan '07 to May '08, as various people have joined in.
Here is the one I found most interesting. It was posted Nov 20, 2007 by adyreeves:
A BREAK THROUGH... for myself only; or for ppl that uses the same Printer and OS versions like me.
Like some other ppl here I want to add, that this is not a critical error on Vista but a comunication bug created by the custom properties of the printer´ drivers.
I am using:
* a wireless Vista based (Home Premium) OS laptop.
* Sitecom WL 183 wireless router.(I assume this is installed correct and with all the features working good, as also the firewalls on both computers)
* a desktop XP Media Center sp2.
* a Lexmark P707 printer.
The printer is connected to the XP via USB Virtual port.
1° There I just had to uninstall all the old printer drivers and delete the printer itself (also the previously created ports)
2° Then I´ve created a clean install with the VISTA DRIVERS ON THE XP MACHINE.
3° After everything was OK, restarted the PC and ADD Local Printer. The wizards do everything(assuming that other make´ Vista Printer Installer will work on XP).
* Few things to add before you work on Vista:
* Disable Simple sharing on the folder options and enable File and Printer sharing wizard
* On both computers you should have same User account and same password.
* Create and enable shares on both computers
* The router is installed correctly if you´ll be able to browse through those shares.
Vista Laptop will work like this.
The laptop can see now the shares on XP pc and also the shared printer from the XP machine.
Just right-click on the shared printer... Connect. Now a pop-up will say : If you want to use the shared printer on you have to install the drivers for this printer. Click install drivers.
After the installing of drivers go on your Vista printers folder and you should find your printer overthere. Make it default.
The PROBLEM now is that the spooler on the XP won´t accept (or maybe it does but with me crashed continuously) the jobs directed from the Vista. In this matter I´ve done 2 things. On Xp I´ve shared the C:/Windows/system32/spool/PRINTERS, and on the Vista, right click, Properties, Sharing tab, Cheked the Render print jobs on clientcomputers.
And it finally worked after 2 WEEKS of trying to work it arround like other ppl tried, and 2 weeks of annoying my wife by staying continuously on those plastic deavils.
So bubye error 0x0000000d, i have to make it up with my wife.
If this does not work, then we can experiment with some other drivers. You may have noted back in Post #6 that my XP machine is showing a deskjet 990c shared printer. I do not own, nor have I ever owned a 990c. I have a Photosmart 8250 which connects only via USB, and when I installed the two sided print attachment, on the second page the margins were offset by 1/2". After working for a while with tech support he finally came back and said there was a problem in the driver and had me install it as a 990c, and it worked. It stayed that way for almost a year before I finally looked for updated 8250 drivers.
In the Technet discussion, on respondent pointed out that he solved his problem by direct connecting the printer to the router thorough a print server.

That is the fly in the ointment. Drivers that are embedded in Vista are not ones that can be installed individually. There is an instruction toward the end, that once the Vista machine can see the shared folders and printers, you right click on the printer and then you should see something about having to install the drivers for the printer and asks if you want to do so. If you answer yes, then Vista should install the drivers over the network onto the XP machine.
This is a process I have never had to go through. I am at a loss to explain why it is so complex on your machine. I even looked to see if there were updated XP drivers available, but just the original 2004 drivers. When I shared my old HP LJ4P and the Photosmart 8250 installed as a Deskjet 990c, it set up in 5 minutes. I bought the PS 8250 around Christmas 2004, so they are not much newer than your DJ 5470.
I added a comment to my previous post about one respondent solved his problem by directly connecting his printer to the router via a print server. I check Best Buy and the only ones they have are wireless for around $100, but Newegg has a good selection. You will have to make your own decision on that as apparently by reading some reviews, they have their own problems.

All Operating Systems, including Vista have Drivers for the most common Hardware, but not all Hardware. So when it asks for the Printer Drivers you put in the CD or Browse to the Driver Files you have downloaded. If the Driver File is an Execute File or a Compressed File you have to expand it and put it in a Folder like Downloads/HPDrivers. Now to Delete the Printer, you go through the Control Panel and Delete the Printer Icons you don't want.
Networking is not that complicated when you understand the concept. The Computers and Networking Equipment you want to connect have to communicate with each other and this is done through Addressing on the same Network and Unique Names. The Computer is connected to the Network, and the Printer is connected to that Computer. So when the Printer is Shared on the Network, that Printer is accessed through that Computer to the Network. Understand the Concept and you will understand Networking.

I can now printer from my laptop! Thanks for your help guys. I found this on the internet that helped me:
Plug in the USB cable to the computer to get the drivers
Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.
Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.
A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the computer nameprinter name ie. My computer's name is basement andthe printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in basementepsonsty
This is what worked for me. Click Here (Cnet)for the forum post where I found this. (Second one)
Thanks for your help rgreen4 and ronf57
