Sometime last year, MSFT installed Office on my computer without asking me if I wanted the download. I never used it during the trial period. I have no plans to use it now, nor in the future.

I really do not wish to discuss why MSFT does what they do ad infinitum, I just want to know the following =

Can I SAFELY uninstall/remove it without messing up my computer? If so, what are the steps to follow? And, will I still be able to use Notepad?

Thanks for your help.

Go to Add/Remove Programs. I'm sorry, in Vista you will have to click on "Uninstall any program" in General View I think? Once there uninstall Microsoft Office using the Windows uninstaller. No it will not mess up your computer, and yes you'll still be able to use Notepad/Wordpad.

Hey Adama!!

Yes , just like techie said, the Control Panel , Programs and Features .

Wait for the list to build up and then scroll down to Microsoft Office ,

click on the program to highlight and at the top click on the :

Uninstall / Change. That should do the trick.

You might get prompted to see if you really want to uninstall.

Just click on the yes button.

Hi guys,

Well, I went to my Control Panel and clicked on Uninstall/Change a program. I scrolled down to MSFT Office 2007 and I clicked on uninstall. Then ok when I was asked for permission. It didn't uninstall.

I tried the same thing twice. I thought I'll restart my computer, see if it resets the thing. Restarted. Went back to Control Panel and the program was still there.

I did it one more time. The program does not want to uninstall.

I went to Microsoft Support Website and read through some of their Help menus, and finally found this document. Here's the link to it support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/en-us

It seems like MSFT Office is not supposed to uninstall the easy way. In that document they specify that this is an alternative way to uninstall and that it wouldn't uninstall everything. It gets into the Registry and a lot of other difficult things, so I opted for not using it.

However, it is informative and I wanted to post it here for you.

Thanks for trying to help me, though. I really appreciate it.

Hi Lil,

I will go and try what you suggested. I've never used Safe Mode, will I be able to continue using my computer as usual?

. . . silly me, there are still so many things I don't know . . .

So then, you suggest that I should press F8 when my computer is booting up. Then go to my Control Panel and try uninstalling the program.

If it uninstalls - or even if it doesn't uninstall - then I should restart the computer the normal way, so that I can have all my functions again?

Hi Lil,

Okay I'm back. I shut down my computer, then pressed the power button and pressed F8, I received a loud beeping/ring/bell that scared the living daylights out of me! LOL

I had to restart my computer 3 times. The third time it finally went into Safe Mode - everything looks weird there. BTW.. Went to Programs and did the Uninstall thing again.

Hi Adama. I am not at home right now to confirm this but I believe you can simply Right Click on the Microsoft Office Home and Student line entry and select Uninstall. Should be able to do that in both normal and Safe Mode.

Hi MPH,
Thanks for your input. I went to my Desktop > Control Panel > Uninstall a Program and found MSFT Office 2007 and right clicked on it, like you suggested.

The uninstall option is right there. I tried it 3 times, however, the program won't budge! Stubborn critter, isn't it?

Hey Adama!!

One question ? Did you use ANY of the services in Office.

I ask this because when I wanted to use Words the First time

It had to install the service. So if you did not start Any of the Office's

services , that's probably why it won't uninstall. It hasn't installed yet.

Hey Adama!!

OK , I found out how you uninstall Office. I just did it in my notebook

and it is a very simple procedure.

First , Go to Control Panel , then , User Accounts. In User Accounts

you will see the last entry that says "Turn User Account Control On or Off"

Click on that one. The next screen , there will be a Box that you will

Uncheck . This will Disable the UAC . Then click on OK.

They will ask you to REBOOT your notebook. PLZ Reboot so the change

can take effect.

Now that the UAC ( User Account Control ) is off , you can now go to

the Programs and Features and Uninstall Office 2007 Student .

You will be asked if you are sure that you want to uninstall. Just click on the Yes!

It should not take too long . About 3 or 4 minutes to uninstall. Once uninstalled

you will be asked to REBOOT once again, PLZ do so.

The thing with UAC is that it will prevent any changes to the Vista Core and since

Office is part of Vista well, WE could not uninstall Office with ought turning off

Vista's protection . I must say that this might be annoying but, it certainly Works.
