Hi Flashorn. Good hunting. I have had the UAC turned off since day one so I almost completely forgot how restrictive it is.

Hi Flashorn,

Thanks so much for the great info. Everything went great, until I got to the point of going back to the Programs and Features to Uninstall the thing.

I got a small window with a couple of things highlighted and I'm so freaking tired from watching the Olympics until midnite last nigt, and then having to get up before 7 am this morning (I had a meeting at 8:00am this morning) that I clicked on the wrong freaking thing! After that, the program would not uninstall! arrrgghhh X-(

I turned the UAC off 3 times, and redid the whole thing, but it again, Office would not budge.

I turned UAC back to On again for the night, and I'll be trying your instructions again tomorrow, because this is the closest that I came to being able to uninstall this program.

Thanks again, Flash. It would've worked if I hadn't messed up. My bad. :(

Hey Adama!!

You're right ,don't do anything else tonight. get a good night's rest

and do this tomorrow. You will have to be more attentive. The instructions

are very clear and if followed you should not have any problems.

I took mine off just for you. To be able to show you how it's done.

When (and this is important ) you turn off the UAC , you will be asked

to REBOOT. Well, you have to , because if not done then the UAC

are not shut down and you will NOT be able to uninstall Office.

OK, enough scolding. That wasn't so bad was it.

Yeah, I did everything you said, to a T, rebooting when it asked me to.

1! It was definitely my fault. I feel exhausted and stressed out.

My BFF's business is ready to take off the ground (finally) and that's the reason I want to uninstall Office 2007, so I can install Open Office. That way I can start making the brochures, mailings, flyers, etc., etc., that I'll be doing for her.

You shouldn't have to uninstall MS Office to install Open Office. I had both on my XP machine at one time. Granted, it was Office2000 and Open Office.

You're probably right, RGreen, but MSFT Office is just sitting there, taking 227 MBs of space when I'm not even using it.

I figure, why not uninstall it, free up the space, and then move on to something just as good and FREE.

You are not going to want to hear this. I use MS Office 2007 and had messed up Word pretty bad, so I was going to remove and reinstall anyway. So I just uninstalled it, running Vista Home Premium and with UAC on. However, I am running as an Administrator.
Are you sure the program was not on your machine from the factory? I know my lappy came with a trial version, which I deleted and then installed the full H&S version.

Hey Adama!!

If, for whatever reason, it won't let you uninstall Office then

the next recourse would be to use REVO but, only the first

option where it says " Built-in - run only the application's uninstaller withought any additional scanning ".

That should do the trick if the UAC is turned off.

Hi guys! I hate to break in on the conversation but it was Adama's post that finally prompted me to join and post instead of hanging out like a ghost! I, like Adama, do not want MSFT Office but I was sort of spooked about uninstalling it even though it's only a "trial" version. It opens all the time and wants my serial number -- SCREAM! I do have lots of drive space plus an external drive, my notebook is 4 -- no, 5 months old now (someday, if asked, I'll tell you the HORROR story of me and HP Tech Support -- that's two weeks of my life I'll never get back plus things said to me I'll never forget!), I love VISTA but loathe that stupid Office and would much rather have Open Office. However, glancing over the instructions I can pretty much tell you I will never get through the installation. I'm not a novice -- I got my first PC in 1997 but the debacle w/ HP recently has really knocked me for a loop and it seems I can do nothing right w/ my beloved notebook anymore. pout :0

P.S. I forgot to thank you, Adama, for posting this question. I could use a friend or two (I have nearly none since relocating) and because of your post I got up the nerve to register!

Palomino Girl and Adama, now on my Notebook (HP) I may have blown it away with everything else with PC De-Crapifier which I used to remove most of the Bloatware. I had a heck of a time getting rid of MS Works on another machine, and finally only really got rid of it when I upgraded OS. I had not used PC De-Crapifier at that point.

Palomino Girl, I'm sorry that you had a hard time with HP Tech Support. You should have noted the time of the call, and then called back and gotten a manager. Most calls are recorded, just for that reason. The employees are fully aware of it. There is no excuse for that, you are after all the customer.

But, on the brighter side, Welcome to the PC Word Community. If you still have lingering problems with your machine, feel free to open a new discussion. We are not perfect, but do have a fairly good track record on solving problems.

Oh my stars, you're so sweet! Thank you for the welcome -- and the sympathy re: HP Tech Support.

Re: Bloatware (I can't stand crap on my drive even though I well have the room) -- would I just download PC De-Crapifier and wave bye-bye to that dumb program? I'm not familiar w/ De-Crapifier but I use CCleaner regularly. Dude, I cannot upgrade my OS. In fact, I get 6 or 8 Vista updates every couple of days. And yup, I sat here w/ a dial up until I got smart enough to look around a little more closely.

HAHAHA -- I have an entire notebook full of dates, times, names of techs who I spoke to, was hung up on, yelled at by, etc. and yes, they record every single call. After two weeks of this you think I was a WRECK? Fortunately, I'm an attorney and I take notes like my life depends on it -- I don't practice here, now I show horses and I rodeo -- so I was set to jet when I was so hysterical HP "elevated my issues w/ a Case Manager." And he called right away -- I give him credit for that. I had multiple ticket numbers, just everything I needed to tell him and get a load of the ENTIRE result of speaking to a Case Manager who would definitely deal w/ this situation:
"You have my sincere apologies." <click>

I kid you not. That was it! I'm still so livid I don't dare call and scream some more. I might accidentally say a curse word and that's a definite no-no. But, damn! You know you and I, as HP clients pay their wages! I told the case manager, "I will never ever purchase another HP product. A gentleman asks me if I'm seeing anyone, would I like to come to India and finally he'd love to come to my hometown and you apologize and close the issue? This is completely UNACCEPTABLE!" I was angry, my voice was quivering I was so angry. As mentioned previously, I've been purchasing HP products, everything HP since 1997. But no more.

So. Tell me how to use PC De-Crapifier and how I might obtain it? ]:) (Sorry, I feel evil every time I think of HP Tech Support.)

PC Decrapifier was originally named Dell Decrapifier to remove the junk that comes on our machines. Basically it's a free download from their website which will explain in greater detail. It will list the programs and you simply check those to be deleted or uncheck those to keep if memory serves me right. I have only used it once and that was a year ago. It took all the trial and sample programs, but not all the internet signup shortcuts, which were easily just highlighted and deleted.

Hi RGreen,

Yeah, I'm running as an Administrator too. And yes again, my Compaq laptop came with the trial version, which I never used, except for using Wordpad.

- big sigh - :|

That may be the problem then as it was a factory install. Try PC Decrapifier.

HAAAAAA You guys are really gonna love this!

Here's what happened =

As I promised you yesterday, I did the whole procedure again today. Turned off UAC and then went to Uninstall Program and clicked on Office, and it did not uninstall.

I grabbed the copy I had printed of what you said about Revo, but it had been a few months since I had used Revo, so I tried my hand at deleting something I had no use for. I tried uninstalling QuickTime. The uninstaller did its thing, asked permission a couple of times, it took a couple of minutes, showing the progress bar, etc., and then it finished successfully. When it was done, the QuickTime icon was gone.

I got my hopes up, even though I was nervous, my hands were cold and my heart was beating out of my chest. I thought ok I can do this, and tried it with Office 2007.

UAC IS STILL OFF, so right-clicked on Office 2007, which gave me a few options. I clicked on Uninstall, then chose the first option like you suggested, Built-In - run only the applications's uninstaller without any additional scanning. Gave the ok for permission to uninstall, and it finished in no time at all. I thought hmmm that was too fast.

I went to Control Panel > Uninstall Program and wouldn't you know? the stupid #%$@@ program was still there!

So I started all over again! Turned UAC back on. Restarted. Turned UAC back off. Restarted. Tried Revo again. Icon is still there. Went to Uninstall Programs to check and Office is still there. The pesky thing hangs in there for dear life!

Restarted again. Turned UAC back on so I could come back here and report on my adventures!!!

* knock knock

* Who is it?

* Patrick, I need to hide under your rock again!

* Oh Okay.

No, I haven't. I'm a little reluctant to try PCDecrapifier, because someone said that CCleaner is the new name for it.
CCleaner is really aggressive and as you know, I had mega problems with it. It's all in another thread that has since been answered.

Besides, when MSFT installs Office 2007, wouldn't they automatically uninstall the trial copy?

EDIT ~ My mistake. I misunderstood you when you talked about PCDecrapifier on a prior post (above.)
