My pc came with everything installed and no cd. Everything, that is, except the Backup/Restore Utility. I have Windows XP. I checked the Microsoft site and the only download I could find was one to restore from XP to Vista. How do I get something to do the job? I have an external HD to put it on but I want to get it there properly.

I have seen very knowledgeable people recommend "ERUNT" ; recommend you start with

the Info at www.winxptutor.com/regback.htm .

Thanks you for your response. I'll take a look at it. What I need is something to backup up my Documents and Settings so I don't lose my profiles, etc. That just happened to me when I ended up having to reformat and reinstall from my recovery disks that I made. Fortunately I had at least copied My Documents to another drive, but everything else was lost. It appears that the Registry is backed up with ERUNT. What does that include? (I'm dumb about these things)

Hey extradesk!!

Once you finish looking over the excellent suggestion of Spirit .

you should also read the WikiDocument made by our own

resident archiver "rgreen" . I think you will find this Doc.

very interresting. Find it here Cloning a Hard drive (system back-up) .

Simply click on the Hyperlink in blue.

Thank you. I skimmed the article and will go back and read it more closely. It has been a big help. Between these two answers, I think I can deal with the problem. Thanks again.

Good discussion about an important subject. All users should make a clone copy of the C drive onto a second HD or USB drive I use Drive Snapshot for my clients, an excellent drive cloning program that I've used successfully to restore crashed/failed systems many times. It is cheap but not free, however a trial period is provided. Note that this is a small, fast program easy to use, but you need to know how to properly use it to get the best results, see the author's website for details. (An unpaid testamonial from a consultant who prefers simple, single purpose utilities for backup/restoral.)
