Is it possible to send a fax over high speed internet directly from the fax machine? Or is it limited to the computer to send the fax?

My friend has at&t dsl and sends faxes freqently. Would he benefit from a service that allows him to send faxes over high speed internet instead of the phone line?

Well Crazy4, the answer is yes and no. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line,) connects you to the Internet and gives you Dial Tone all on one Copper Line. So your friend could send Fax's by dialing other Fax Machines, but you can't directly connect to other Fax's with the DSL. Now with the Internet connection your friend can subscribe to a Fax Server and upload Fax Files and the Server takes those Files and sends them to the appropriate Fax Machines. You have to pay for this service so your friend will have to decide if the cost is justified.
