Hi Everybody!

Well, since I was able to get rid of pesky MSFT Office Home and Student 2007 a few days ago, yesterday I installed OpenOffice! I know, I am amazed I did that all on my own too... :0 :p

Anyway, I never did use Office. But now that I have OpenOffice I was wondering if you guys could give me some suggestions:

* Have you used OpenOffice?

* Have you made flyers or business cards with it?

* Can you insert a graphic or a pic in a document?

* Do you know of any Tutorials about OO?

Thank you so much. Your suggestions are appreciated.

Maybe we should both embark on the quest for learning OpenOffice since I have NEVER used it as a replacement for MS Office.

LOL, I loved that animated gif, and no I have not checked out the YouTube videos. I prefer to self learn unless my brain really becomes stumped on something, which then I would turn to a tutorial.

I hear you. Me...? I like to have guidelines to follow, so Tuts come in really handy when I want to learn something new.

Hi TFF,

Have you tried OO yet? I tried it a couple of days ago, just typing a couple of sentences. Since I'm not used to it, it's kind of baffling/interesting. There's an automatic spell correction thingy (IDK what else to call it) that appeared as I was typing, and I wanted to use it, but everytime I tried, it would disappear. :0 LOL

I don't have the need to use it too much yet, so when the time comes, I'm sure the Tut that Lil gave us will come really handy.

That's cool, TFF.

Today a friend of mind tried to help me by sending me an email with an attachment for OO, but I couldn't open it because he saved it to Office Word.

Since I don't have any of the Office programs, I wasn't able to open it. Isn't that a drag? I never needed Office Word for anything, and now that I don't have it, something comes up where I need it. Darn it! X-(

Open Office will open files saved in the Word '97-2003 format. This can be done one of two ways.
One is the long way, that is open Open Office Writer and then click on File, Open and then use the search function in that box to highlight the file and click on Open.

The above image shows a file I created in Office 2000 on another machine some time back. If opened just fine.
The short cut method depends on how Open Office was set up initially. For those who have not yet installed Open Office and do not plan to use Microsoft Office the following image is important. Early in the install process the following dialog box is displayed, and basically what it is asking is if you want to use Open Office as the default to open the following MS Office file types. Checking them will enable you to simply click on the file and it will open if in Open Office.

If you have not done this, you can still after the fact direct Open Office to by default open MS Office files. The following is for Vista, but if there is somone who needs this for XP, please ask in a post. It is basically the file association where you associate a file extension with a program and that program is automatically opened when the file is double clicked.
The file I have selected is the same Word document used in the above example. It sits on my desktop, and by placing the cursor on the file icon and right clicking, a menu box opens. About a third of the way down is an item called Open With and it has a little arrow to the right. Placing the cursor on that menu item then opens a secondary menu box that has three items. Microsoft Word (2007 in this case) something called swriter (which is the file name for Open Office Writer and then a choice for default.

Selecting either of the document generators (Word or Writer) will only be effective for this particular document this time. If you select the option of default, the following option box opens.

You select the program you want and highlight it, make sure the check box for Always use the selected program to open this kind of file is checked, click ok and the file will open. In the future, double clicking this file type will always be opened by the one you selected.
Since I have Office 2007 on this machine, I have left the default for .doc as Office, but can still open a .doc file anytime in OO Writer.
Note that the default file saving format of OO Writer is .odt, but that while OO Writer will open a Word .doc, Word is unable to open a OO Writer .odt file. So if you are exchanging files with someone, unless you know they have OO Writer, you should use .doc to save the file. Clicking on Save As opens the listing of file types.

Ok, I'm back! :^0
These instructions were THE BEST! I found a picture that a friend of mine sent me. First I got a msg that it couldn't be saved to the original Office format, but I was able to save it to the OO format after all.

For your 2nd pic: I didn't check any of the 3 boxes, because it says If you are just trying out OpenOffice.org 2-4, you probably don't want this to happen, so leave the boxes unchecked. So that's what happened there.

For your 3rd pic: I wasn't able to do this because I don't have the OO icon on the desktop, it's somewhere in the downloads file, I think. I can only get to OO by typing the name in the Start Menu.

For your 4th pic: However, this last pic and what you wrote, got me to thinking. I went to Documents and I clicked on the first doc I had there. I got a msg with a red X saying that's a no-no, because the product was not currently installed.

Posted Image

Then I thought, maybe this is where I should right-click to see if what RGreen says shows up... So I right-clicked on the name of the doc... And, I'll be darned - IT SHOWED UP! The menu you talk about showed up. I went to Open With, then Choose Default Program.

Then, I chose swriter and clicked on "Always use the selected program............" And lastly OK.

And, GUESS WHAT??? ALL of my documents flipped and changed to OpenOffice! It was a beautiful sight to behold!

1! This is a tiny snip of my docs, even though they are less than 12, now they'll all play nicely within OO !

YAY, I'm so excited it worked! Thank you so very much, RGreen for all your excellent help!

I use OpenOffice.org both at work and at home. At home, I use it on a macbook that does not have any windows based word processor programs or spreadsheet programs installed on it, so that I can read word, excel, and other files using my macbook. At work, I use it for the handy .pdf export feature. I can create a document using either Word or OpenOffice.org; open that document in OpenOffice.org and then select export pdf from the file menu to create a document that is difficult to alter (we use .pdf files for bids that we want to e-mail to a client). All in all, openoffice.org is a great solution for anyone who wants to create documents and spreadsheets without paying for software. -M
