We have an old desktop that has Windows XP on it. It is networked by Cat 5e cable to another desktop. We are on broadband 6.0 On Friday night the computer played videos from Nascar on Friday night, but on Saturday night, they were jumpy and jerky. Our electric went out and the computer was shut down incorrectly. I've updated the Internet Explorer, and the Adobe Flash Player ActiveX. The disk cleanup and defrag has been run weekly. Also, when trying to play videos on ESPN, it puts the error code that Internet Explorer has encountered a problem with the plug in and must close. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi MidnightsMaMa2 and welcome to the forum. You are using Adobe Flash Player. You might want to try a different media player such as windows media player, or Real player. There are a fairly significant number of those things out there to try. If you were streaming the videos from the internet, it could have been the service. If you have say, ComCast and you are online and a bunch of neighbors decide to get on at the same time, it doesn't matter what speed you have, it will be degraded due to the number of people using the internet. It is like the old telephone party line system to some degree, except if the neighbor was on the phone, you couldn't call out period, but you could listen in. ]:) (Not very nice I might add). I am assuming you were streaming video from an online source, because if was a disk, you could simply play it ina DVD player. I would also recommend getting a UPS ( Universal Power Supply) for those sudden power failures, as it will give you plenty time to save your work and do a proper shut down. coastie65

Thanks, I will try using the Real Player. Actually, we are on AT&T broadband 6.0 and I just can't figure out why the silly thing played clear as a bell one night and not the next. And yes, it was a clip on the ESPN site on the internet we were trying to play and not a dvd. But thank you for the info and we will try that, however, we have been having a new problem since last night.....the Antivirus 2008 got our other computer. But thank goodness I read all the info on here and got the Malwarebytes program and WOW finally it is gone!!! So tomorrow I will go back to my original problem. Computers, never a dull moment. I will let you know if we get it resolved.
Thanks

Hi, It's NASCAR weekend here in Richmond, but I think Hanna may have something say about it though. That antivirus 2008, is probably the only thing I didn't have in here on the 21st, as it seemed like I got hit with everything else. Getting back to the original problem, that is one of the things they don't tell you. They say you have so and so speed, but don't tell you that is providing you are the only one online. The more that are online the slower the speed. Depending on where you are at, AT&T is rolling out their Fiber Optics. I have Verizon FiOS, and it is terrific. Typical speeds are ( In my case) 15 mbps down and 2 mbps up. Verizon just up graded that to 20 down and 5 up. There is also no Bandwidth issue either. You can download HD Videos til the cows come home if you wish. Glad you took care of that other headache. coastie
