Ok, so the java thing is out now. To check the processes taking most usage , when you are in the processes tab., Click twice on the cpu column heading. That will sort the list in order of cpu usage . Now you can easily see what all is taking most usage.

Also you can maximize the task manager and then post the snip as Lil mentioned to see if any un-necessary thing is taking resources.

Hi Lil and Piyush:

Ok, I double-clicked on CPU and got the thing going. Looks like the thing that's taking the most KBs is something called dwm.exe - I saw it jump/fluctuate from 10,708K to 12,207K and other numbers.

I maximized the whole thing and here's a Snip for you guys:

I don't know how this gives us an accurate read as the numbers are always jumping around.

Also, right after I took the Snip, the CPU usage went down to 12%, and changed again to who knows what.

OMG, I just looked through the Snip to find the dwm.exe and under it there's an iexplore.exe with 81,304K ! wtf is that??

:D Hi :

Just finished reading through this Thread for the 1st time . I would like to "add" a followup

concerning Java : when the Java Notification icon appears in your System Tray, it usually

means your Java is not current, a security risk . Should always try and have ONLY the

latest "Version" on your computer, so I recommend you look in your "Programs and

Features" to see if it says "J2SE Runtime Environment 6.0 Update 7" !? IF this is NOT

what it says, you should uninstall it, then go to www.java.com and get it .

As far as the "Processes" Info you are being asked about, it MAY be easier to Post a

Log of the "Process Manager" of the HijackThis program !? To do this, click the "Config"

button on HijackThis's Main Screen, then click the "Misc Tools" button, then click the

"Open Process Manager" button and "copy & paste" its Listing here .

Adama - Do you see the arrow on the CPU column . It faces upwards. That means the list is in increaseing order of cpu usage . Click it once more to sort in reverse order . So that the processes using CPU most are listed. Sorry it was my mistake earlier that i asked to double click the cpu column . I m presently at home on xp system and it sorted it in correct way on that. So sort it in decreasing order of cpu usage and post a snip.

Heres my one cent on this situation. I don't think it has anything to do with Java at all. You have too many things on your process running and thats causing your wigjets to load up slow and previously i heard you say it takes quite a while to boot up for everything to load. Usually a normal pc has about 30-40ish max on processes but you have 79. Your cpu and memory usage is considered high. What i advise is remove stuff not necessary at startup like hp and stuff from msconfig. . Keep antivirus antispyware etc on startup but i would just disable the others. This is just what i would do if i were you now and see if it makes any difference.

Posted Image Hi :

The "dwm.exe" is Microsoft's Desktop Window Manager IF it is located in

C:WindowsSystem32, otherwise it could be spyware ; best to run a Windows "Search" to

see IF that is WHERE it is located . There is Info about this at Sites such as :

www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/what-is-dwmexe-and-why-is-it-running/

Hi SpiritWind,

Looks like I have 2 older versions of the Java thing.

Posted Image

Looks like the first one is version 4 which installed itself on 8-18-08; and the second one is J2SE Runtime Environment 6, which looks like it was installed on 12-18-07.

:D Hi :

Based on what you just told me and Posted, you should uninstall everything you have of

Sun's Java ( even the "version" installed on Aug 18 is 3 "Versions" out-of-date ), doing your

Best to COMPLETELY REMOVE "it"; then you can go to www.java.com to get the

latest .

P.S. It would be wise IF somewhere you made a "Note" of periodically using the Online

Scanner of Software Inspector at [http://secunia.com/software_inspector] to check the

Up-to-date "Status" of your software . And I really recommend you get that "AdMuncher"

off your computer ; since you seem to be getting an excessive amount of Ads, some

security Settings need to be tightened up somewhere .

I agree with SpiritWind. Get the latest java and remove older ones.

The last snip you posted was fine but still the usage was mounting to 52% but the sum of all processes wasnt. This means some system process is eating all the cpu usage. Dont worry about the desktop window manager . It makes the aero interface wok and it stays at around 50,000k in mine also. In your task manager , you will see a show processes from all users button. Click it and now you will see system processes also. Arrange them also in same order of cpu and post another snip.

You really have a lot of user processes as previously mentioned by Lilxkid.

Posted Image Hi :

I am concerned about the "Presence" of "wisptis.exe" showing in your Task Manager,

based on the Info at www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/wisptis.exe.html ;

do you have a "Microsoft Tablet PC Platform", even though that Site mentions you can

legitimately get it by "installing Microsoft Office 2003, an Adobe product, or Journal Viewer"

The "wisptis.exe" in your Task Manager Listing has no "Description" as to WHERE it came

from, especially IF you do NOT have any of those 3 Products mentioned, though I

realize it is extremely rare NOT to have an Adobe product on a computer !?

Well, how about that, eh? I started this discussion because my gadgets are taking a long time to load, ended up uninstalling the Java Internet files which got rid of the unwanted Java icon on the Notification Area... And now, I just uninstalled 2 Java programs, and then ended up installing Version 6 Update 7.

I now have another cup of joe on my Notification Area!!!! LOL :0 :p

And now, EVERYTIME I WANT TO GO ANYWHERE, OR CLICK ON AN ICON, OR DO ANYTHING, I GET A FREAKING NOTIFICATION ABOUT JAVA!!!!!!!!! aaarrrrggghhhghhgaahhh

WHAT HAVE I DONE??????????? This is even worse now!

Ok, I'm done ranting.

Piyush, here's the other Snip you wanted:

Dear Piyush, Lil and SpiritWind:

Thanks so much for all your assistance up to now, but I'm feeling kind of burned doing this thing. I gotta go do something fun because my head is spinning from all of do this, now do that, no do this and that.... snip here, snip there, snip everywhere! :D

So I'll have to come back to this tomorrow. Thanks again guys! :)

:D Hi :

That Java-oriented Nag Screen is from your Vista "Security Center"; just click that box to the

left of "Do not show me the warning for this program again", then click the "Allow" button &

hopefully you will NOT see that Screen again !? What do you expect from Vista, which is

trying to protect you from yourself !?

When I get the Java Update Notification icon in my System Tray, I just click to "Delete" it .

I can understand the frustration especially coz of me . I asked you put lot of snips of the same thing. I wasnt doing that intentionally but it occurred as i was typing from my xp system which has different task manager from vista. Had it been my vista system i would have only asked for a single snip. Anyways. Both spysweeper and trend micro are using resources. Rest all processes seem fine.

The bug has been identified by Sun and its due to the protected mode in IE7 in vista. It occurs on some vista machines and not all. They havent yet identified the exact cause for this.

Hi Piyush,

:) No problem! I learned a lot from going back and forth... :) Sorry it took me so long to get back to this thread. I've been busy elsewhere.

Today I had an IT (friend of a friend) take a look at all my Processes and my CPU usage. He came in remotely, and we went through the same things that you guys and I went to the other day.

I showed him all the Processes going on in my computer. Today I had 90 Processes and only 25% CPU usage, and the latter kept going from 22% to 25%, all the time that we were looking at them. He said that all the Processes look fine. I asked him if he thought there were too many, and told him about the 47% + I was getting the other day. He said that's actually very normal for computers running Vista Home Premium.

I told him that a friend of mine (you, but I didn't tell him your name though) has Vista Ultimate and that his Processes are way less and the CPU usage is only about 5%. He said that each computer is different, and each person has different programs installed.

We discussed my 4 Photo Editing programs as well as Trend MicroAV, and he agreed that TMAV uses a lot of resources, and it also takes a long time to load up.

We also went through all the programs installed on my computer, and they are all needed. We also looked at all the programs that I have disabled and that don't start when I start up my computer. So everything looks good in those areas.

We concluded that all the Processes are fine for my computer, and that the CPU % usage is adequate and normal for me because of all the Photo Editing Programs I use.

I'm still not too happy that my Gadgets are taking long to load. I think I've come to the conclusion that I'll have to uninstall Trend MicroAV eventually, and install something else that's not as obnoxious.

So I wanted to take the opportunity to say THANK YOU to all of you guys who have been so kind and generous with your time and your assistance.

YOU'RE THE BEST! :x

Hi Tech!

Yeah, I uninstalled the 2 old Javas and installed the new version, with a new cup of Joe! hehe

I'm actually glad that I have UAC turned on, though. :p I know a lot of people here hate it, but I don't hate it. Sometimes, it alerts me to things that I know nothing about, and I end up learning more in the process.

Have a great rest of the week, Tech. TTYL, k?
