When I started my computer today the fan was fine but when I got home the fan was on max like it is when the CPU is at 100% (loud). I restarted by computer but that didn't help so I ran a program that always makes my CPU goto 100 (a game) and that made the fan go back down for about a minute then it went back up and it's like that now. Does anyone know what the problem is?

This is usually a sign of a dieing fan , or it may just need to be blown out with a can of air to remove all the dust.

Hi webmonster, I have moved your discussion to components. Sounds to me like an overheating issue. As was suggested, check around the heat sink and make sure there isn't a build up of dust. You also might want to check the bios settings as well, but I don't really think that is an issue. If you have had the processor out recently, you might want to check the amount of Thermal Compound that was used, as folks tend to get a little heavy handed in applying that stuff. coastie65

Thanks :) I'm going to get a fan from pcworld tomorrow. Does anyone know how I could control it manually so I can turn it down?

When you say new fan, are you talking about just the fan to go ontop of your current heat exchanger, or a heat exchanger/fan combination. If you are replacing the heat exchanger, please be careful not to spread too much thermal compound on top of the CPU chip. The thermal compound is designed to fill in the very small scratches in the top of the CPU, not to coat the top. A very small amount is needed. For Artic Sliver 5, the proper amount is 1/2 the size of a grain of rice. For others, no more than a grain of rice.
