my musicmatchbox doesn't work so I tried to download another copy from one of the free sites. It wouldn't load as it said I already had a newer version. So I tried to remove the old one and control panel won't let me. I get an error message saying setup.exe has encountered an error and needs to close. Can anyone help me?I just want to remove the old non-working version and install a free version of plain old musicmatch jukebox.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode and uninstalling Musismatch in Safe Mode?

I'm not that literate with computers. I know just enough to be dangerous. I'll probably need to get a "geek "involved. I wish I knew how to solve this but it's not in my area of expertise.

When booting the PC, immediately after the function key option start hitting F8. This will display a menu, (white text on black background) and one of the options is to boot into safe mode. Choose that and hit enter.

The PC will boot, but will not load most of the drivers, including the video adapter, so the display will be very grainy and low resolution, but that is normal as at this point it will be using a driver that will operate all displays. On XP it will also display the word Safe in all four corners. In the safe mode go to the add/remove section on the control panel and attempt to remove the program.

Afterwards, reboot the machine and it should enter Windows normally. The icon arrangement may have to be redone as they will be re-positioned for the low screen resolution used in the safe mode.

Thank you so much for the instructions which I followed to the letter. Unfortunately, I encountered the same error message in safe mode. I then went to the program files in the C drive and removed the entire folder for Musicmatch Jukebox. It still appears in the list of programs in "add/remove" in Control panel and when I try to install musicmatch again it still says I have a newer version already installed. I'm thinking I will never get rid of this program and it doesn't work.Any more ideas?

Are you using the Add/Remove function in the control panel or just deleting the program folder? It is unclear from this post.

You should try and install Revo Uninstaller. It's free. It will get rid of all the components of MusicMatch. BTW, I know MusicMatch was a great music jukebox app back in the day, but are you aware that Yahoo took over MusicMatch and has since been taken over by Rhapsody? Try Rhapsody.

As Smax says it sounds like you simply deleted the specific program folder under programs, which will not work. Unfortunately, the add/remove function now will not either since when it goes out to find a program to remove, it's already gone.

When a program is installed on a PC, parts and elements of that program are scattered in many locations, along with referenced in the registry. When you remove a program by brute force by simply deleting it's main folder, it's kind of like pulling up a weed but leaving all the roots behind. The references are still there so when a new installation is tried, it fails because it finds a reference to a newer version, even though the majority of the program is gone.

As CBFree4U has said, try Revo uninstaller. I have never used it as I have not encountered that situation, but at this point, it won't hurt and you have nothing to lose by trying it.

Rhapsody is tied with RealPlayer or vice versa as I use real player but am billed by Rhapsody for the membership thing and maybe my music downloads. Revo Uninstaller is a good free app and I have that thing installed in here. coastie65

musicmatch is no longer available. Musicmatch was purchased by Rahpsody so you will have to download Rahpsody instead.
