I have had a nasty worm in my computer..not sure from where!

I have done the RUN "regedit" and have tried to remove all the items not needed in the registry and unable to do so. I have spoken to multiple tech persons and nobody can get these three items off my computer.

1. Kodak gallery 2. Epson reference manual 3. Bareshear

The problem is that this is OLD software that I can't download and remove again..I believe the worm got in to all of these area.

I am so frustrated, any suggestions or any knowledge on "registry cleaners". Is is possible that Mcaffee has some firewall issues, system retore issues??? (which I did yesterday also) The only think I have not done is "refrag" but it won't do it because "C" only has 6% space because of all of this mess!

I will take any advise on removing this stuff from my computer?

Thanks. Lori

Hi Ginceasar, and welcome to PCWorld Community.

You didn't mention what kind of computer you have, how old it is, what kind of OS (Operating System) you run in your computer. Please give as much information as you can about your computer, and I'm sure someone will come along and offer some helpful suggestions.

FWIW, 2 of the things you mention don't look like worms to me. They look like at one time you may have used Kodak and Epson software, and they have stayed in your computer. So, it actually looks like you have old software you want to remove.

If you have tried the Uninstall function already to get rid of that software, my suggestion would be to download Revo Uninstaller. It's a small, standalone utility that does a heck of a good job removing old stuff from your comuter. I'll go and get you the link.

Defragging your computer is a good thing to do to keep your computer running smoothly, however, defragging won't get rid of these pesky things.

UPDATE - Here's the link for Revo Uninstaller It's a free utility. This link has a lot of good info about it. Usually when I run something like this, I read up on it beforehand so I know what to do.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I have moved this to a more appropriate Category in order to get more responses for your problem. I don't know what you have scanned with, but you may want to try this for starters www.malwarebytes.org it is free and is very good. By reading through this section ( Privacy & Security) you will find that most members are not fans of McAfee or Norton for a host of reasons. Another stop would be www.AumHa.net These are volunteer professionals who deal with this stuff. There are a number of good free security apps out there Such as SUPERantispyware & Avast! Antivirus. You will undoubtably get other suggestions as well and all good. As far as cleaning out old files this a good app. www.ccleaner.com coastie65

I just did a quick search of Bareshear... looks like it's a hair product download? Either that, or someone's Will?

Either way, I'm unable to assist you there. Sorry.

Hi Lori,

Why are you going into the Registry? I don't go in there unless I have very specific details on what to do. Yes, we need more information on your computer and what error messages are coming up. If you suspect an Infection, then you should begin by running a Full Scan with your Anti-Virus Software.

Hi alchav, She didn't go into the registry. She used a scanner/cleaner that took care of the work and removed part of the stuff. It was also recommended that she go to AumHa and have then take a look, which I think is doing. So far she is doing fine. coastie65

If you are serious about removing worms, you MUST begin with AntiVirus or Malware removal. Are you running any Antivirus Software ?

If you haven't already done so, I would urge you to download&install SUPERAntiSpyware . Before running a full scan, update the definitions.

You also have not stated the name & version of your Operating System.

Thank you so much. The malwarebytes helped and it was the same area Microsoft sent me too. I have gone from 40,000 problems to 900 problems in my scans. I now only have 248 infected files today...working on other suggestions from others, as well as microsoft too. Thanks, eh?

Hi everyone!

Thank you so much for all your suggestions..they are working! I called Microsoft and they did most of the things that you are all suggestions, with multiple ours of phone time, that is.

Okay, to answer some of your questions. I have Pent 4 AMD 64 Processor, 2ghz, 1gb of RAM. Microsoft XP pro.

This is everything I have done or ran, per all of you and Microsoft..thanks.

super anti spyware, malwarebytes, ewido.com (AVG anti spyware) pcsafety.us/smithfraudfix and I did the RUN option of these:

Prefetch, temp, mrt, regedit and I believe that is everything guys!

I still have the epson and kodak gallery in my ADD/REMOVE programs after all this?? I also see multiple MCAFEE temp files that I can't delete when I go to RUN-temp. t appears many of the things that come up on the scan are HKEY stuff and Hewlett P. photosmart stuff...so I don't really know if I have virus, worms or what? I can tell you that for a few months the computer has been flashing on the desktop, since I bought this new HP printer and when I scan with my Mcafee, it showed nothing??

I am going to redo my last scan right now (ewido.com) because I did not have the time to let it complete yesterday. After approx 75% of scan, it showed the 240 infected files..

So, there you have it. Hope that helps you, to help me. Thank you to all of you. Lori

Hi Lori, I know the aggravation having gone through it about two weeks ago myself. I went to a legitimate site that had been hijacked and got dumped on big time and ended up with all kinds of stuff including assorted Trojans all over the place in here. Some other things you can do is to uninstall and get rid of Java and then reinstall it as stuff can hide in there. Also it may not be a bad Idea to to delete the restore files ( I found a Trojan in mine) and create a new restore point afterwards. coastie

OMG!!! I have to say thank you to YOU!! The revo actually removed the Kodak gallery! And it came up on the side task bar "TROJAN REMOVED" I was so thrilled! That was the only thing that worked...although it "fails" when I try to remove the Epson reference guide...but thanks!!!! :^0

:D Happens to all of us at some time. You might want to go to www.CCleaner.com and download and run that thing. It will safely get rid of all the junk files you may have. OK, you should be fine with Java then. Oh yeah, about the system restore files, go to control panel......System......... then click on the System restore tab, check the box to turn it off and then apply and OK, then go back and remove the check to turn it back on then Apply and OK. That should clear the files. I think the latest Java version is Java 6 update 7. coastie

Hi Lori, I'm glad to see that you're getting some results. :)

I do want to mention that you have a very old version of Java. I suggest you click on this link to go to their website and download the latest version which is J2SE Runtime Environment 6.0 Update 7 (Java 6 Update 7) Then you'll have the latest version and less trouble with sites that require Java.

I had Version 2 and another one on my computer, and just last week I uninstalled them and downloaded Version 6 Update 7.

Does anybody know anthing about P2P sharing?

Do I need an antivirus protection that will help this? I swear after I am done all this, I will never have to call a geek squad again! Instead of being an ICU nurse, I will open my own IT company...lol!

http://anti-virus-so...tenreviews.com/

I have realized Mcafee sucks..does anyone have any advise, based on my question above on these higher rated antivirus protections in the website above?

Thanks. Lori
