Hi Lori, I am personaly using Avast! as does quite few of the other members for the AV coverage. SUPERantispyware is good for the other stuff and both are nonintrusive and lightweight and best of all reasonably priced................FREE. You will probably get a lot of good recommendations from others as well. Incidently, I have SUPERantispyware in here as well, but I use it as a redundant scan to Spysweeper ( my active app) rather than active protection. You can have multiples installed, but only one of each actively running. You won't find many, if any, big fans of either McAfee or Norton in this community. coastie

LOL It's good to be a Techie, eh? :D :D

I don't know much about P2P sharing. Basically I just stay away from all that stuff. And that could get to be a gray area, and verging on certain subjects that are illegal to discuss in this Community.

Thanks for that! I didnt' really know what it was, until I just read about it all. I have itunes and I am safe.

I am just trying to get all the right protection on my computer to prevent all this mess from coming back! My computer will be pristine after this!

And yes, fun to be a techie! lol

Hi Lori, I think we need the ICU nurses worse than we do the techies. With all the exercise I get sitting in front of this thing I could be the next customer or so I'm told. Actually, I do get out and work in the yard on a regular basis, so I guess that counts for something. coastie

Coastie,

Yes, I am sure the sitting all day isn't good. Get up and move at least every hour, so you don't get a blood clot in your leg! (my two cents) I have not got off my butt with this computer stuff in days, except to volunteer this am. I must say, would rather be moving and shaking because my eyes and back are taxed. It has to be tough on you..

I am doing the super antispyware scan again and now I have over 300 infected, when previously I was down to 48. Where is this coming from and when can I get this computer to ZERO??

You are right, ICU nurses are more important at this time, especially with the mess this country is in with the health care.

Thanks..I will get to the bottom of this and have this computer clean

Hi Lori, I do get up and go into the kitchen to get an ice cream cone or something to munch on. :D Ok, you might want to reset your cookies thing to med - med hi as I think you are just picking up a lot of ad cookies and they are no real threat. You will get them everytime you go on line and even here at PCW. I can tell you that this thing isn't zero and has a bunch of cookies on it. coastie

Hi Lori. As to your question on the anti virus link you provided. I would stay away from McAfee and Norton for sure, You will not see a lot of fans here of either. As I said in another post, there is some really good free stuff, which fits my budget nicely, out there. Avast! and SUPERantispyware come immediately to mind. I ould keep malwarebytes in there as well to have for a secondary scan from time to time. coastie

Thanks for the great links, Coastie. I've saved Avast! to my Faves and I'll be checking it out later.

Hi Lori,

I guess you have been working on this a few days, all I use is a good Anti-Virus like AVG or Avast and then do manual cleaning. I don't like using a lot of Utility Software. If I can't clean it up in a few hours, and make it run solid, I Format and reload Windows. You have to have the right tools and knowledge, but then you know you get rid of everything. These Viruses and Worms put stuff all over, and they write commands in your Start-up. You could manually delete Folders and Execute Files, but you have to know what you are doing. So if you can't clean this up soon, I suggest saving your Data and then Format and reload Windows. Make sure you Scan your Data before putting it back on your HDD.

She has a handle on it and has done quite well. Actually, I believe she has more patience with this stuff than I did a couple of weeks ago. It does get all over ,I even had one thing that hijacked my wallpaper of all things and another Trojan was in my restore volumes. I was finding stuff in my Task manager as well, as you said it will get all over. After a lot of scans it still took some poking around to get the rest and it was time consuming. As for a reformat and reinstall that is a last resort thing. There are utilities that be used safely with the right guidance from the right people. coastie65

:D Hi Lori :

IF you would like me to try and ascertain as to WHY your SUPERAntiSpyware Scans went

from 48 "Items" up to 300, I would need you to Post the "Logs" of those 2 Scans !? To do

so, click "Preferences" on SUPERAntiSpyware's main screen, then click "Statistics/Logs"

along the top menu bar . You should then see "dated" Logs !? Left-click on the desired

"log", which should highlight it. Then click the "View Log" button and "copy & paste" the

Result(s) into a Post here and will give my best Evaluation .

Good day... Thanks for supporting the fact that I know a bit about what I am doing!

Good news...I used "ewido" anti-spyware, revo uninstall and the malwarebytes and it looks like I finally got rid of "kodak" and the real pain in my rear, "epson" I am quite thrilled today. AND I only have ONE infected file today!!! YES!!!

Can you just tell me one last thing please? Where else can I look in my computer, to make sure they are GONE? When I do the RUN-temp thing, I have tons of Mcaffee files that WON't delete?? Is this a problem? RUN prefetch deletes all but can't get rid of anything through RUN-temp? Any ideas..

I am almost done with this and now I can get a life!

Thanks so much!

Lori

Hi Lori, As far as McAfee goes, go to there site and get their removal tool. Once done with that, I gave you a link to CCleaner which is very good and free, so get that and run it. That should take care of McAfee. After you do this, (run the removal tool and CCleaner), let us know what you have then. As I said, I went through this two weeks ago, and didn't particularly find it enjoyable, mostly irritating. The things I called the folks who had Hijacked that site can't even be posted in here. :D This is for your diligence, !http://forums.pcworld.com/legacyimages/
1! as you've certainly been hard at it and seem to be doing quite well. Trust me, I've had my moments when i felt like this: !http://forums.pcworld.com/legacyimages/
1! Ok, enough with the humor. I would like to see what comes up after you take care of those two items. coastie

You have more guts than I do, Lori. :0 I'm kind of shy about using all those scanners, logs, etc.

Okay I will admit it, I'm a little afraid that when I run one of those logs, I won't know what to do and might end up messing the whole thing even more.

I know, it doesn't make any sense. :p
