Hello everyone.

A couple of weeks ago I downloaded the trial version of Ad Muncher. I really like the fact that now I'm not bothered by excessive, obnoxious, blaring ads.

However, it does take a long time to load, and it takes a long time for me to get into most websites. And I do have slowdowns when I go to do anything here at PCW website - like using the Insert/edit image option.

What are your experiences with Ad Muncher and would YOU recommend it?

Or, do you have another Ad Blocker that you like much better and that works just as well.....?

Posted Image Hi :

Around Sept 12, I recommended you not use Ad Muncher and look into "tightening" some

of your Security Settings ; BEFORE considering a "replacement" for "Ad Muncher",

I recommend you read my "Document"@ forums.pcworld.com/docs/DOC-2144|d-2144 .

There is also a Setting for "Use Pop-Up Blocker" there ( in "Custom Settings" ) , and IF it

has NOT been "enabled", using that Setting might meet your Needs !?

Do you have a "Flash Player" on your computer ? IF Yes, as far as I know, It's Presence

can increase the number of Ads .

Hi SpiritWind,

Thanks for your input. I checked the document you listed - very nice.

My Pop-up Blocker is active and enabled. Yahoo on the other hand, has accelerated their ads in hopes people would buy their for-pay email service, IMO.

I prefer to have a real program that blocks the annoying ads. But I realize that there may be other programs that could be better than Ad Muncher - that's the reason for this thread.

OFF TOPIC:

BTW, somehow, every time I read your posts it feels like you're yelling at me because I haven't done what you said.

:D Hi :

I rarely, if ever, "yell" . I do wonder IF you looked into my Suggestions, at times, when

there is no "feedback" . I have a Yahoo email Account and do not experience any

increase of Ads from them, if any Ads at all . Are they your ISP, though they appear

"linked" to A T & T !?

P.S. I did a Google Search for "Vista compatible PopUp Blockers" and did not see

"Ad Muncher" listed within the 1st 5-6 pages; the Ones I saw I have never heard of,

so do not know IF they MAY be "Adware" or worse !?

I have looked into your suggestions, even if there has been no "feedback." I tend to make up my own mind about things.

Good for you on "Not having an increase of Ads from them." And yes, they are "linked" - AT&t/Yahoo is my ISP.

If I remember correctly I have mentioned a few times that I have their free Basic email service. The paid email service has no ads.

Thanks for the Google search.

Hey sweetie!!

I don't know if this will make a difference for you or not but,

have you tried IE7Pro ? It adds all kinds of functionality to IE

not to mention blocking ADDS and Flash (not me) the player.

This is just part of the context menu but as you can see I have the Add Blocker and Flash Blocker

enabled and this is what I get when on the PCW site.:

This is the top of the the PCW site and no ADDS. So, it must be working. If you want to know more

Click on these links:

emrupdate.com for IE7Pro . You can view a clip on how this works.

For reviews go to : download.com IE7Pro .

To go directly to their site and see all it can do : IE7Pro.com .

This should keep you busy for a while. LOL!

Hey Flashorn, Hmmm, must be me, but I'm pretty oblivious to those banner things, so am not bothered by them, at least I don't pay them any mind. I've never thought I got a preponderance of ads anyway, but maybe i just don't pay as much attention to them as others do, sorry Advertisers, but I guess your efforts are wasted on me. :D coastie

Hey coastie!!

How's that yard work coming along? When you're done , I have a pay load of work

to do also , if you're in the neighborhood. LOL!!

As you know I use Firefox but, when I did use IE a long time ago , I came upon this

little app. I installed it for all of the conveniences it has but, it just so happens that it does block

just about everything that the Advertisers can throw at you , Just forgot about it. Yesterday , I installed

IE8 and IE7Pro asked me to update their app. That's when I remembered that Adama was looking

for something to block adds. Personally , I don't mind adds. They give you the jump on new products

that you might have missed otherwise. So, yes I do read them and when they are interesting , I

investigate further. I'm just curious by nature. But I'm always careful of the Cat!

Sometimes something may catch my eye and I'll check it out, but for the most part I don't pay much attention to them so am not bothered. I bet you have some work up there, as I imagine the rakes have come out. We won't be breaking them out until next month and the leaves will be mostly off the trees by mid December. I have a mulching mower so I just run over them and mulch as my back won't tolerate the bending and bagging.

Hi Flashorn,

I've been doing some preliminary research on the IE7 Pro, and I found another thread I started at the beginning of the year asking for info on Ad Blockers.

Seems like I did check out IE7Pro back then, but was turned off by a lot of mispelled words in the instructions. I just checked it out again and things haven't changed much all these months.

I just looked at a vid they had in there and it looks like you have to go through a lot of steps to block images, etc. I like things that are easy to set up and then forget it, know what I mean?

So, do you only have the Add Blocker and Flash blocker enabled on IE7 Pro? and does it plays well with Vista?

I will continue with my search, because the trial period for Ad Muncher ends in less than a week.

Hi Flash,

I'm still doing more research on this IE7Pro thing. I went to the CNet link you provided and it does sound pretty good, as well as the emrupdate link.

Thanks so much for your help, dahling. :x

Posted Image Hi :

I changed my Google Search to "Vista compatible Ad Blockers" and got quite a different

"List"; the only FREE Ones were the IE7Pro ( avoid the Adware copycat ) mentioned by

Flash and the Quero Toolbar ( http://www.quero.at/] ) . The Upper-right hand section of the

Quero Site implies it is not Vista compatible, but further down the webpage under

"2008-02-28 Version 4.1 released", it says "download the special [Vista version
now " .

They recently started a Forum, what I consider a very positive Step .

Concerning IE7Pro : perhaps the misspelled words in the "Instructions" is because the

Main Developers of the program are Chinese and many of the Volunteers on their Support

Forums do not have english as their main language !? I found out about the Adware

Copycat in a Thread on those Forums .

Hi Spirit,

Thanks for the input on the non-English speaking people taking care of the IE7 Pro info - that makes sense.

So you think that IE7 Pro is and Adware copycat? What does that mean?

That just makes no sense to me whatsoever! That link is from the IE7Pro Forum??? and, they're saying the program is "Adware"???

What kind of creepy thing is this IE7Pro, that even their own Forum members are speaking AGAINST it???!!!!!!!!

Posted Image Hi :

On that Forum they are saying that some Adware company has made a "counterfeit" of

IE7Pro, calling it "Internet Explorer Pro" ; the Version "Number" of the "counterfeit" is

2.3.6, whereas the Version "Number" of the "legitimate" program is 2.4 . The Download

Site of the "Legitimate" program is on "IE7Pro.com" whereas One of the Download Sites

of the "counterfeit" is on "tinyurl.com" . Clear now !?

Hey sweetie!!

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. OK, I have been using IE7Pro for over

a year now. I have NEVER had any kind of adds that came with it. It would be

nonesence to use a program that would constantly bug you about one thing

or another. Have I ever suggested a program that wasn't legitimate to you?

This one is free and works just like it says.

If you don't want to configure IE7Pro , you just leave it the way it is and use the default

settings but, I would enable at least the "AdBlocker" which also enables the "FlasBlocker"

by default. Once installed , you get a icon on the bottom right hand side of your browser.

From there you will get a context menu when you Right Click on the icon. You can choose

whatever you want the program to do for you. Here is a screen shot of the menu:

1!

As you can see , it does not interfere with the security mesures in IE7.

You can also see that, I have the "AdBlocker" and the "FlashBlocker"

Enabled. There is no drain on your resources and only takes up a tiny

space on the browser's task bar. I would recommend and have, to anyone

who asks me about it.

So, do yourself a favor and install IE7Pro. You will not be disappointed with

it's features and it's ability to block adds and flash. If you are still not convinced

of it's abilities then post back and we will talk. If you do install and have questions

on how and what to configure then, post back and I'll explain.
