I have never heard of a program called "Cyber Defence" & a Search using Google reveals

no such program ; to best help you need to provide the EXACT spelling of the software .

Since there is a lot of what the malware-fighting "community" calls "Rogue" programs

"infecting" people, I will guess that is what you MAY have and recommend you use the

FREE Version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, available from

www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php . The more SPECIFIC Info you provide, including

the Name of your Operating System, the better we can possibly help .

The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

I repeatedly get message that the system has recovered from a serious error error signature BCCode: c000021a BCP1: E316FA98 BCP2:C0000005 BCP3: 77F57E4

BCP4:0069F0FC OSVer: 512600 SP:00 Product: 7681

Any help would be greatly appreciated for my Dell Inspiron 2600 windows XP , INCIDENTLY THIS COMPUTER GETS SCREWED UP WHEN I TRY TO INSTALL THE SERVICE PACK 2

If you have this problem and are also having problems installing SP2, it sounds like it may be time to back up all your data, reformat, and re-install XP, upgrade to SP2 and then install all your programs, and restore your data.

I seem to remember that cyberDefender was in some kind of Rogue list, a while back, but I don't know if it has been de-listed.
I would suggest you follow SpiritWind's recommendation and download MalwarebytesAntiMalware program, (it's a free, standalone, easy to use program) then post the resulting log in here.

If you're also having problems with XP SP2, then I would suggest you start another thread within the Windows forum, that way more people will be aware of your problem and you might get more reponses within that forum.

Also, please provide as much info as you can about your computer, OS, etc.

I tried to download registry optimizer get Run time error
Program:CProgram FilesAdvanced Registry Optimizeraro.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Any further suggestions?

I tried once more to down load this time was able to use optimizer for 20 fixes. this did not help . I still get a recurring blue screen ( 2 to 4 times) Now ARO is asking me to purchase to fix additional 190 errors. Should I purchase this or just go for complete reinstall?

Hi Barb, To be honest, I'm not a big fan of those optimizer / registry utilities as they can do more harm than good. As far as a reformat and reinstall goes, if you have your stuff backed up somewhere such as a disk or another HDD, then go ahead. I have a feeling that the registry is messed up and may require it anyway. coastie65

Posted Image Hi :

Why are you trying to use "Registry Optimizer" ? These kinds of programs are generally

considered "registry cleaners" which can do a lot more harm than the minimum benefit

they possibly will do . One of the best Possibilities to remove "CyberDefender", which is

considered a borderline "Rogue" product, is to use the FREE "Rogue Remover", available

from www.malwarebytes.org/rogueremover.php . IF that program fails to complete

the removal, I then recommend you use the FREE "Revo Uninstaller", available from

[http://www.revouninstaller.com/] . For a Starting List of reliable, trustworthy security

programs, read what I wrote at [http://forums.pcworld.com/docs/DOC-1141|d-1141] .

thank you Not the answer I was hoping for but actually what I expected. Is there somewhere to go for walkthrough for reinstallation of this old computer that has long run out of support. Dell at its best was not always helpful. Now will use new computer for instructions,

Tried your suggestions. Revo uninstaller program also turned on blue screen when I tried to remove Cyber Defender. Looks like I am going to have to reinstall. All of this took 2 hours as computer was so balky.

Hey Barb, I would try the Malwarebytes link that spritwind suggested before going to the extreme of a reformat and reinstall. It is a very good utility and I have used in the past sucessfully, for that kind of stuff and it is FREE. coastie

I'm surprised that no one suggested startup your computer in 'safe' mode (resart>immediately start tapping the F8 key until you get a screen with choices for booting>choose 'safe mode')--then run the uninstaller

I also agree, Format and reload Windows is the only way to go, but I would take it one step further. The computer is six years old, and the HDD is at the end, so I say get a new one Seagate or Western Digital 160Gb. Upgrade the Memory to max 512Mb. One screw holds the HDD, slide the old one out put the new one in, boot-up with the Windows Disc Format and load Windows. Install Drivers if needed, put the old HDD in a USB Enclosure and transfer your old Data to the new HDD. 1-2-3 and you are up and running, the old computer is as good as new, if not better.

The malware was one thing, but when he posted that he couldn't install SP2, that pointed me in a different direction. Of course if he can manage to get it cleaned up, maybe SP2 will install.

Hey spirtwind, You looked up the wrong thing as in her second post the message said Cyber Defender.

www.cyber-defender.com/EDC/landing/10/?affl=Motiveinteractive[up2d&campaign[/u]code=296276&int_page=1] I checked it out, but am not really sure of it. coastie

As itman stated she should try and unistall Cyber Defender in safe mode as I think that may be the problem. I put a link to the site of Cyber defender and I'm not real sure of that thing. May be something that behaves like Norton, not very well. I believe if she can get Malwarebytes in there and then boot into Safe mode, and run that as well as uninstall that Cyber Defender. She may be alright. coastie
