I consider myself an average computer user, but probably a novice when it comes to tech support for error messages like this. Upon start up, I receive the following message, which is new over the past few weeks:
This application has failed to start because SSLEAY32.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
I have no idea why it started, and it doesn't seem to affect performance of the computer; however, computer has been relatively slow for a number of months, particularly to start up.
I have a Dell Dimension XPS Gen 3, Pentium 4CPU 3.2 GHZ with 1 GB RAM on Windows XP Pro
Appreciate any help.

Hi Tdoc. Something going haywire in your registry DLL (Dynamic link library).
I'd run CCleaner first..: www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Also run registry clean up ( Same CCleaner)
Then run registry defragment...: [http://www.download.com/Auslogics-Registry-Defrag/3000-2094_4-10678033.html]
Reboot......Please post your result
Good luck

Hi TLF, and welcome to PCWorld Community.
I did a quick check of SSLEAY32.dll on Google and this is what I found. I really have no idea what this Apache thing is, though.

:D Hi :
As Adama said, it MAY be "linked" to some "Apache" program, but would more likely be
"linked" to Zone Alarm !? The "This" in "This application" is NOT specified !? There is also
a possibility this MAY be linked to some malware on your computer, and running a "Full
Scan" of the FREE Version of "SUPERAntiSpyware" from
www.superantispyware.com .
The Last Thing I would ever recommend is running "registry cleaners", which can do a lot
more harm than the minimal benefit they may possibly provide .

I agree with SpiritWind, the SuperAntiSpyware scan would reveal if there is any kind of infection in your computer.
Also, Registry Cleaners are not for the faint of heart, as it can do more harm than good, if people don't know what they're doing.
I would say - start with downloading the SuperAntiSpyware program that Spirit posted for you, run the full scan, and then post your results here.
That way the Security experts like Spirit can better help you with your problem.

I do not know how to fix this error or what may have caused it.
Apache is used for web servers, much like Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS).
One site reports SSLEAY32 as malware: SSLEAY32 reported as malware
Another site reports it as part of a PostgreSQL: PostgreSQL on WinXP
Have you installed any new software that would need Apache, PHP (programming/scripting language) , and/or a SQL database?

It's always a good idea to google your problem. But in this case just download it from:
www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?ssleay32
and forget about it. I believe one of your installations just removed/replaced it with something.
