Has anyone made their own website? I need an easy to use up to date web developing program that is recognized by most web hosting services and capable of having about 10 links down the left side of the home apge for sub-pages. I've bought microsoft's new expressions web, but I find it very difficult to understand and use. In the past, I've used a program on an older hp computer from 2000 called trellix web page publisher. It is out of date now, but it was very easy to use and set up comparitively. Any suggestions on an easy to use program capable of my simple needs, from poeple who've already done this? Thanks!

Dont use all caps in your title like that, it is considered rude.

I use mozilla its free you can try it and see if you like it. Its pretty easy to use but there is a learning curve involved.
Mozilla has now been superseded SeaMonkey.
These are both complete suites but you should be able to install just the web editing part of it if thats all you want.

How detailed/sophisticated are your web pages? Are they going to be simple, basic pure HTML pages with just text and pictures? Or do you want something that can do more sophisticated web page stuff such as CSS, javascript, etc?

I have two websites, www.thelinkinspector.com and www.bayflicks.net. The first is a very simple site done in FrontPage--very out of date by today's standards. The second is a blog, and I use WordPress. In theory very simple, although I've had to do some php code tweaking, which isn't easy because I have trouble getting the hang of that language (I'm not really a programmer).

I suggest you try Serif. Here is the site to download the free ones. I the WebPlus and the PhotoPlus among others, and they work well.

It will be a simple web site

1. A home page with maybe 10 subpage links in the left column (at the most,)

2. One or two pics on each page,

3. One large graph for text on every sub-page, with a "camera" icon to the left of each row of the graph (to pull up a pic when clicked on.)

So, basically, as simple a program as I'd need. No extras. But first and foremost, easy to use!

The other thing I need some advise on, is, once done and ready to upload, which web hosting service would be best for me? My only concern right now, is that I'd be able to go to the site and change or delete a line of text and picture link in the graph here and there as an item sells, without having to make the changes to the page on my computer, and have to re-upload the entire page every time I want to make a change!

that depends if you want pay host or free host.
Godaddy is a good pay host.
There are a few free hosts that are good, but you will have to go thru and try out allot of them before you find one thats ok.

you cant do that with a simple site, you can probably do that if you set it up like a forum using Simple Machines Forum

I recommend DotEasy ( www.doteasy.com ) for free Web Hosting. You'll need to pay for your domain name, but the free hosting package is a pretty good value, and should suit your needs well.

If I recall correctly, they even have a web site creator - though I cannot speak to its ease of use, as I've never used it. (I prefer text editors.)

Definitely, you can download some free stuff or buy software (I like FrontPage 2003 even more than version in Office 2007) to work with. You also can learn how to use it and browse through a great Web resources of HTML, DHTML Javascript ... lessons. BUT if you have Microsoft Word 2003 or 2007 and know how to use it, you can design your page there (I understand that you are looking for something pretty simple like: some text with links and pictures) and Save as HTML. Don't forget to use tables, it makes everything looking much better.

Hi Christopher and welcome to PCWorld Community.

I have a link for you from the Serif Web Design Software called WebPlus X2 And here's a link to a friend of mine's website, Major Confusion, from the UK. He built that website completely using WebPlus X2, and he has done some really nice things with it.

Serif's learning curve is not as steep as with other programs, so you might want to give those links a try. They have an excellent Support program as well.

I myself use some of the Serif photo editing programs, specially PhotoPlus X2, to make the graphics on [my thread|t-38503] and like I said, the learning curve hasn't been too bad.

I would recommend installing Concrete5(.com) on your web server. It's a decent out-of-the-box CMS (content management system), and it is highly likely that your web host supports it. All you'd need to do is set up the MySQL database (with help from your web host if you need it), and you'd be good to go.

Same goes for WordPress(.org), although it is more naturally a blog system than a CMS, but installation and customization is just as easy, and pre-designed themes are very readily available at WordPress.org.
