If you pay bills online, wouldn't this make it tempting for even a best friend who can't control their curiosity to be able to access your personal information? I have neighbors who could sure use the wi-fi but I do pay bills online. How safe would my personal info be if I made wi-fi available to them?

Perhaps a stupid question: do(es) the other computer(s) accessing the internet thru the Wi-Fi laptop need Wi-Fi capability?
If not, how can it/they pick up the laptop?
If it/they do, what is the added value of accessing the internet thru the laptop instead of directly?

I think the benefit, in the situation dutchpete describes, if I'm not mistaken, would be if the laptop in question was using a broadband card or something to that effect vs having direct access to local wi-fi. In that case the other computers would not have direct internet access unless they were using their own wireless card. This was a good tip. I wonder if there is a way to gain that kind of flexibility in Windows XP!
