My emachine has two 512 mb ddr memory.. I took one bar out to see what exactly was in it since i plan on upgrading.. I put the block of mem back into the same slot.. Now the pc boots ups but the monitor shuts off instantly.. I took the battery out and checked that the memory was correctly in its slot.. I also tried moving that memory block to another slot still nothing.. Thanks

Hi,

The first thing I would do is to see if your system boots using just the 512 DDR you DIDN'T remove. If it does, then I'd switch the DDR's and try again. If the system won't boot, then you've damaged the DDR. BE SURE TO USE A GROUNDING STRAP AROUND YOUR WRIST TO KEEP YOU GROUNDED WHEN WORKING WITH MEMORY CHIPS. They're very sensitive to static electricity.

If you haven't been inside your computer much, my guess is the Memory is okay, you just need to seat it properly. I just thought of something else, you have to make sure the computer is off and the Power Cord disconnected. If you were doing all this with the Power Cord connected, you might have blown something. Just make sure you have clear access to the Memory Sticks in order to seat them properly. The best way to work on a computer is to lay it flat on a table with everything disconnected, then you can open it up and have clear access.

Hi cheyenne and welcome to the forum. As Al has said, check and be sure that the memory is fully seated. DO NOT FORCE IT, make sure it is properly lined up, if not, than it can be damaged. Also as the others have said, make sure the computer is off and the power cord is unplugged before doing anything inside and at the very least touch the metal case to ground yourself first if you don't have a grounding strap. You didn't post the Model number of your eMachines, so I am not sure if you have an update option. My last one T2824 was maxed out at 1 Gb DDR. This one, T5212, maxed out at 2 Gb DDR2. coastie65
