First of all , your Adobe Reader is out of date. It should read Version 9.
You will have to download and Save the file to your HDD. Now , you would go
to the Control Panel and then Programs and Features. There you will find
Adobe 8.1.2 . Click on it and then click on the Uninstall. This might take a few minutes.
Next, Install the new version. This will also take some time, maybe 3 or 4 minutes.
Here`s the link Adama, for the new version for Vista.:
http://www.adobe.com.../readstep2.html
The Flash Player is what enables you to see all of those animated Ads that
you see (and block) on web sites. Some of those are for informational
purposes and are needed. So you will also have to install the Flash Player.
Download and install from the link I provided Tech. I have both on my Notebook.
The Adobe Reader is for reading PDF files on your computer and on certain web sites ,
their documents can only display with Adobe Reader. Somewhat like the Foxit PDF Reader.
OK Adama if you have any other questions well, you get it . LOL!

Really should NOT have Adobe's "Reader", since it is so malware-prone and there are
"safer" Alternatives available, such as Foxit Reader or CutePDF. Recently, Researchers found a new hackertoolkit that uses nothing but Adobe securityleaks in order to infect systems. "PDF Xploit Pack" ( www.trustedsource.org/blog/153/Rise-Of-The-PDF-Exploits )adds all kind of exploits to PDF-files. When a certain exploit has successfully infected the OS, the IP address is sent to the attackers, so they need to try again. This to reduce the time it takes to manage the bots.
Use of PDF-files is becoming more and more popular among malcreants, this because other toolkits also have PDF exploits now. A year ago only 3% of the exploits were PDF directed.

Thank You for this information. I will take a look at the link you posted.
I know that Adobe has problems with malware but, some of us really
do need this program. We work with and use Adobe on a daily basis
and not everyone we work with are aware of alternatives.
Mostly the files received are from known sources so, at work we don't
give it a second thought. But, when at home I make sure to scan all
incoming files with the context menu which contains my AntiVirus
and SuperAntispyware.
Thanks again for this.

I just clicked on the link you provided and the Adobe v9 started the download, it didn't give me the option to save it to my Desktop. But it seems like it installed ok.
But now, I have 2 different Adobe things showing up in my Programs:
The top one called Adobe AIR, and the bottom one called getPlus® for Adobe. I don't know what the heck those things are and if I need them or not.

I don't know why it started when you visited the page I linked.
I went again with both IE 8 and Firefox . I did not get an automatic
download. You are still not showing the Reader 9.
Uninstall Adobe Air and Get Plus but, not Flash Player ActiveX.
Now try this link from FileHippo Adobe Reader 9 .
The download should NOT start automatically. The link I provided , I got with IE 8 so,
this should be the right one for your browser.
This is what I have on my system:

OK, you don't need "Air" but it is downloaded with Reader 9 along
with "Acrobat.com" . This is not a problem , you can uninstall afterwards.
Mine says "Adobe Flash Player Plugin" . That's for Firefox. Your's says,
"Adobe Flash Player ActiveX" that's for IE 7 . This is the one we changed from
10 to 9. Leave it!
You also don't need "Adobe Shockwave Player 11". I have it for testing purposes.
Ok, Adama, The download file is 33.5 MB . (good thing you got a faster connection EH!)
Since I have the same Operating System as you do , you should show the Adobe Reader 9
once the install is finished in the "Performace and features" or add / remove of Control Panel.
Give it a go and post back to see if you have succeeded. If you have Any questions before
you install , I'll be here.

I'm sorry I was kind of short last night when I posted to this thread. I was really tired (spent 6 hours doing Doctor stuff yesterday) and I really didn't feel like downloading the Adobe thing. I should have listened to that, because I went and downloaded the thing anyway, and it kept giving me a msg about the "GetPlus needs to be closed" and I had no idea what was going on.
I finally got the Adobe to download but when I tried deleting the Zip file for the Adobe Install, I ended up screwing up my laptop. I got a black screen and I had NO access to my computer at all.
I tried booting in SafeMode and then I couldn't get to the Internet. I tried deleting the new v9 but couldn't for some reason. So I ended up doing a System Restore to yesterday afternoon. When I tried getting in again I got a black screen! aaaarrrghhhh!!!!!!!!!!!
So, frustrated, I closed down the computer and left it alone.
This morning when I logged on, my desktop was back! PTL! and so was Adobe 8.1.2!! Haaa. But I still have the Adobe Install Zip folder on my desktop. So now I don't know what to do.
I've always been able to delete any and all Zipped folders, so I don't know why this one gave me so much trouble. < big sigh >
These are the Adobes in my Programs:

Anyway, I won't be able to stay for long because I have to get ready to do my Tuesday night meditation with Mother Mary, but I thought I'd get back here and say hi and tell you what happened.
Thanks for all your help, Flash.

1! wooo hoooo!!!
Wow, that link was perfect Flash, it downloaded v9 with no problems. It did leave the Adobe AIR, but not the Adobe.com nor the GetPlus... I think that maybe the last two were probably appropriate/specific for Your IE8 OS, but not for my IE7 OS.
So, here's what it looks like in my Programs Folder:

Pretty nice! :^0
Ok, now take a look at what shows up on my Desktop:
That first folder on the left is the Adobe Reader Install folder I talked about in my post yesterday, the one that gave me the Black screen after I deleted it.
The graphic below it is the Adobe Reader 9.0 Installer.
Do you think that I would be able to safely delete these two? and hopefully there'll be NO black screen....?
Now I'm up to date, so thanks again, Flash! :x

Yes, have been busy at work with a possible strike on next Wednesday. So , yeah , horrible! 2100 employees on the bricks.
OK, to get to your issue. If you can, bring up your Program Files Folder ( Go to > Computer , double click on the C: Drive and then,
Double Click on the Program Files to bring up the folder ) . Now, Drag & Drop that Adobe File that's on your Desktop and
drop it in the Program Files Folder and don't touch it again. You got a Black Screen because you deleted the install folder
Documents. They are out of the way and don't blemish my desktop with all kinds of icons.
So , this will be pretty easy . All you do is Drag & Drop out of the way, right?
Now, we will have to update Java as they again came out with a new version 1.6 0.11 .
Didn't Spirit talk about JavaRa in one of his posts? Well we will be using it. I will give the
step by step on how to run this little .exe on another post.

"JavaRa" is PRIMARILY used to uninstall MULTIPLE "old" versions of Java, and to use
this program, which Adama probably does not need because she is most likely up-to-
date having ONLY One Java version on her computer, download from raproducts.org/ .
Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
Accept any prompts.
Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Thanks for the detailed info. I went ahead and put the first folder in the Program Files folder you suggested.
The other one I just put it in a folder I have on my Desktop called Unused Desktop Icons, where I have stored away some shortcuts that I don't know what to do with. That way it's not cluttering up my desktop. I don't know if deleting it now would create more problems with the new Adobe v9, so I think I'll just let it be.
< gun shy > :)
So, from your post I'm guessing that from now on, instead of downloading software to my Desktop I'm supposed to download them to the C drive? ?:|
re: JavaRa - Thanks for the heads-up, but I don't really need a Java utility that uninstalls old versions of Java, since I only have one.
I'm going to reply to SW next.
Thanks so much, Flash! :^0 :x

Hi SW,
Thanks for the info on JavaRa. But, it's like you said, I don't really need the JavaRa because I only have one version of Java.
I'm going to go to their website to find the latest version.
Thanks for your help.

downloading software to my Desktop I'm supposed to download them to the
C drive? ?:|""
Hey sweetie!!
OK, Adama , you can always download to your desktop (some times it's better) but, it's
the installation place that you have to be careful with. Most if not all programs will
install to : C: Program Files the name of the program . This will place the program
in the Program Files Folder on your C; Drive. The C drive is where all of your programs
are. Some go to Program Files, others like drivers, would go to "SWSetup" and so on.
For all intent and purposes the C: drive is your Hard Drive . You also have the D: Drive
which would be the Recovery Partition. But , all files and folders are on your hard Drive.
So the Hard drive would contain the C: partition and the D: partition. The total of these two
partition would equal to the amount of Hard Drive space on your Computer.
Example: If your Hard Drive is a 100 Gigabyte HDD then, the amount of the C: Drive +
the amount of the D: Drive should equal to 100 Gigabytes or close to it. In other words
the total amount of space on your HDD that was specified by the manufacturer when
you bought the notebook.
What I suspect happened is that the program installed the files on your desktop instead
of the Program Files Folder which would read like this C: Desktop the name of the program ,
in this case Adobe, where it should have read C: Program Files Adobe .
When you install a program , at one point in the installation they will ask where to install the program.
There is usually a rectangular box which reads Install in :
C: Drive Program Files name of the program | Browse |.
The "Browse" gives you the opportunity to choose a different location to install the program . Your's might have
been selected to install to your desktop. So, when you deleted that File you also deleted Adobe
which is needed to run certain programs.
OK sweetie , this is as clear as I can be. If you have any other questions I'll be around.
