I live in Kansas and my daughter lives in Virgina. She is having problems with her Windows XP machine. I would like to try to do a Remote Desktop Connection into her computer to investigate her troubles.

I have told her how to set her machine to "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer" . When I run Remote Desktop Connection on my machine the dialog box asks me in the Computer box for the name of her computer or the IP address of her computer so I can find it on the Internet.

How do I determine the IP address of her computer in Virgina when I am in Kansas?

Any additional thoughts on Remote Desktop Connection would also be great!

Thanks for your help!

Hi Bill. Try this CrossLoop ......Its Not very usefull when I tried the FREE version. Idid connet to my son's laptop and pulled out the file that He needed.

In your case Its worth to invest in the software like this....Very secure.

Try the free V. first...See if it works for you.(ITs safe..Not a Malware)

www.crossloop.com/

Have fun.

hiya art

xp's remote desktop connection isn't all that great (works on local networks perfectly)

this program will be much better suited to what you are trying to do-

it's called teamviewer

after download/save to computer, and you've double clicked on the exe file, select the run option (do this for both computers)
go thru the license agreement also. If you get a prompt from your firewall, allow it

have your daughter call or e-mail with the two codes (left hand side) that you will enter (on the right hand side)

i can vouch by it, because i use it all the time in my computer support business.

Tech4me and Crazy4laptops -

Thanks for the quick reply! With both of the software packages you recommend, after it is installed on my daughter's machine in Virgina and my machine in Kansas how does my machine fine her machine through the internet to make the connection?

Crazy4laptops - is teamview free - if not do you know the approximate cost?

Thanks again!

teamviewer is a free for home/personal use program (click on the green button-right hand side) or here

heres a simple version of how it works-
when teamviewer is run, your daughter's computer is registered (via id code listed) on the teamviewer host server

when you type in the id code, a query is sent to the host server looking for a match. When the correct id is found, you will get a prompt for access/password. Enter the passcode and you are ready to go.

Crazy4Laptops -

I have one more question about TeamViewer.

I went to their website tonight to download the free "personal" version. There are two downloads to choose from. The "Full Version" Teamviewer_Setup.exe and the Customer Module TeamviewQS.exe.

Do I install the "Full Version" on my machine which would be the Support machine and then have my daughter install the Customer Module on her machine which is the machine in trouble? Or do we both install the Full Version.

Their website was a little confusing on which version or versions I needed to download and install.

Thanks very much for your help. I really appreciate it!

since you are confused about what to download,

here's what to do-

download the setup here

you do not need the customer module at all

and just run the progrm, don't install it

(see pic below)

accept the license agreement

and get the codes on the next screen from your daughter (left side)

(you enter the ID that your daughter gave you on the right side)

i'd post pictures in this thread for the other two, but the pcw image uploader is on the fritz, sorry.
