Hello! Everyone,

I downloaded Windows Service Pack 3 and when the computer restarted I get the following message "A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the licence for this computer. Error Code OX80004005". So, the computer won't open and I had to go on Safe Mode to go to System Restore. I have a Windows XP Home OS, legally owned and paid for. I didn't have any problem with the previous packs. Is this service pack necessary for my computer? I feel it is not worth the agravation if it is not needed to run this computer.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Aurora

Hello Aurora,

If you go through Help and Support, it will download the proper software. Microsoft has to check your computer for Genuine Certification. Going through Help and Support, accessed from the Start Button, makes for a smoother SP3 Load.

Hey aucastillo!!

I haven't bothered with this SP. Lots have updated and have

had no problems. Others well, are like you.The one's that were

successful in updating say that there is no or almost no difference.

I have enough work keeping up with Vista that I won't be bothered

with this SP for my XP machine. I will , however , recommend that

you read a few sites that should help you in installing SP3 if you

still want to.

technet.microsoft.com .

Jesper'sBlog

The one common piece of advice is to Disable or even Uninstall ALL of the security programs

on your PC while installing SP3.Make sure you download all the installers and save them to a

Flash Drive and then Disconnect from the internet to install SP3. You could also create a

Restore Point before starting this procedure.

So, if you still have your licence #'s for these programs, I would

recommend that you copy them down and save them OFF your PC.

Well, I hope this can help you decide whether it is worth it or not.

Hey Flashorn, That thing has been sitting in my tray begging to be installed for quite sometime now. With your description of things, it isn't likely to get installed any time soon, if ever. :D coastie

Hey Guys, and you call yourselves Tech's, nothing is wrong with Service Pack 3 if you can't load it on your computer something is wrong with your computer. Like I said, I do go through "Help and Support." The other day I was working on an HP Laptop using an AMD Processor, and I had to do a Full Recovery and the Disc put Windows XP/SP2. I wasn't going to upgrade to SP3 because of some of the things I read here on PCW Message Board, but decided to try it for myself. I did go through "Help and Support," and Microsoft did load extra Patches, but it did finally load SP3 and the Laptop ran great after. So if you have a solid running Machine you should have no problem with SP3, as long as you do it properly.

:D Hey Al, I'm just dragging my feet a bit, and have been kinda busy anyway. That is what System Restore is for. You get a do over ( Hopefully :D ). I'll probably get around to it. I had installed it once before, but due to another issue, I did a reformat and reinstall and haven't as yet up dated it again. coastie

Hi Coastie, you're correct to wait until you feel confident an upgrade will work. I have been working with computers since the DOS days, and I use to jump in with both feet on any kind of upgrade. You learn real fast not to do this when you get that gut renching feeling when your computer doesn't come up. So wait as long as you want because only you can make that final decision. I have a slight advantage, I can try upgrades on different computers. I haven't upgraded to Vista, because XP runs all the Programs I like, so I think I will wait for Windows 7.
