Where's the privacy?

Hello. Here I go again (never one to leave well enough alone).
Let me know if I'm out of line here but I just rec'd. an e-mail from the forum which kinda bugs me. I was under the impression that the forum was for people like myself who need information or for people who have information for people like me. Don't get me wrong, I think the forum is fantastic, I couldn't do without the help I rec'd. over the past few months from all the contributors....thank you.
BUT, why did I just receive an e-mail through the forum from someone called "GLOB 30" which was nothing but an advertisement for his/her product (an online translator and greeting cards)? When I clicked on the link: forums.pcworld.com/message/157583|m-157583
I was told, by the site, that I was not authorized. I clicked on the person's link: [http://forums.pcworld.com/people/glob30|~182908]
and found the person is new as of today and has never posted any discussions, yet here all of a sudden I get and advertisement for his/her product. Is this right? Should we be using the forum for advertisements?
Please let me know, am I wrong or is this a misuse of the forum? I am curious .
Thanks ?:|

Theres always going to be people spamming this and thats its just part of the internet. Either you get used to it or don't use it at all. There that answer your question?
Ya see!!
If you want privacy live in a hole in the ground.
If you want to bitch about privacy then go online and whine about it while big brother watches you.
My talent is is not only amazing, it is all encompassing & astronomical, if you knew 1/2 of what i forgot then youd know something.

Hi yep, I did as well, while I was dealing with that stuff. It has been removed as it was a spammer. I am not sure of what happened, but like you, I wasn't real happy about it turning up in my e-mail. The reason you got the the "Not Authorized" message is that I had moved it to another location out of the public sector, that is not not accessible to the general members. coastie

Hide your email then by clicking your stuff then profile. Then click edit user profile and choose hide option on email so it wont be public
Good idea, but in this case, mine is hidden and it turned up in my box as well, while I was working to trash all the spam he had dumped in the site. coastie

What is surprising is that the e-mail showed up in members notifications before they had responded to the posting. Normally that does not happen. Even if they only look at a post, it is not supposed to notify them of an update.
Was the spam in response to a discussion which the above had previously posted a response? If so, that would explain the notification.

Hi Yep,
The same thing happened to a lot of us a few months ago, when Kellie was still here, someone was MAJOR spamming the Blogs, etc, and we were getting multiple email notifications from this person.
This kind of spamming is actually nothing that we as members can do about it, we just have to be aware and notify the right people about the problem. This is usually something that the Community Manager and Bill would have to take care of. HTH
Also, there's no need to personally attack any of the Forum members, some of our members just have a different opinion about things, as well as a different sense of humor and sensibilities.

Hi Adama,
Thanks to you and all respondents to this concern. Unfortunately, unlike my personal e-mail service provider, I/we are unable to block those who feel the necessity to harass and inflict their childish pranks on sincere members.
With reference to "....no need to personally attack...", there was not really an attack as such. I posted a question and the first two 'twits' decided, rather than address the issue logically, to attack me personally. All I did was respond in kind. I do not/would not make a habit of affecting my standing in this or any other forum, as can be attested to by my co-operataion with the forum members in the past.
All in all, all suggestions are appreciated and I will save myself and all other SERIOUS members of this forum the inconvenience of responding to immature members. They will simple be black listed in my records.
Thanks

Hi again Yep,
All members of our Forum are valuable, in one way or another, irregardless of their personal choices for sigs (or lack thereof,) the way they speak or write, etc., etc.
Everyone is appreciated, just like you are too, because everyone has something that they can contribute to this Forum in their own personal way. We grow and we learn from each other. IMHO.
I defended Snorg and Lil, because just a couple of days ago one of our Mods and I, as well as all the members of this forum were called "unintelligent" by a brand new member, and that really hurt because I know it is not true. We just have different ways of seeing things, as well as different ways of expressing our ideas.
Again, everyone is appreciated. :^0
Peace.

Hi Everyone,
I've read your posts and know feathers get ruffled when we sometimes we phrase replies in ways we don't initially intend. Please keep all responses in line with the Discussion title. Please be respectful of other members and their opinions, even if you disagree with them. We encourage subjective opinions and discussions of individual experiences and perceptions. A difference of opinion can be expressed without insults. Please review the PC World Community Standards at http://www.pcworld.c...community.html. By posting on our site, you indicate that you accept our Community Standards and Terms of Service. This is a great thread so let's stay respectful and positive!
Thank you! ~Kristina
