Hey tech, Yep, I get into the spirit of eating on Thanksgiving. I forgot to get a head of lettuce for the upcoming Turkey sandwiches after the big dinner. Oh well. I'll make do.

Hey Flashorn, Actually it's tomorrow, as we celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November. Then I'll be putting up the Christmas stuff. By Monday, I'll be all decorated and ready for Christmas tree and all ( It's artificial). I hate dragging all that stuff out of the attic as that is the worse part. Well that and putting up the tree and decorating it. maybe I'll just hang CD's all over it and have High tech decorations. :D

As we all enjoy our holiday feast and the company of family and friends may we all take a moment to remember our troops abroad who will be missing one of this countries most heart searching holidays and lest we not forget the liberties we enjoy because of their committment to our country. Please say a prayer of thanks to them and a hope for their safe return for next years Thanksgiving celebration. God bless you all and God bless our troops, both here and abroad.

Amem MJD. I was very fortunate in my 5 1/2 years of active duty, I only missed two Thanksgivings at home with my family and one Christmas. I missed Thanksgiving in 1967 while aboard the USS Randolph while in the Mediteranean, and missed both while stationed at NAS Cubi Pt in the Philippines in 1969.

I was proud to serve, and am proud of those who serve today. As I am writing this, Mumbai is in the news, and my heart and best wishes go out to our friends in India. It brings home that Democracy and Freedom everywhere is under siege, and we must remember that the irony is that Freedom is not Free.

We offer thanks for those that protect or ways of life and our freedoms.

The Pilgrims' Menu
h3. Foods That May Have Been on the Menu
Seafood: Cod, Eel, Clams, Lobster
Wild Fowl: Wild Turkey, Goose, Duck, Crane, Swan, Partridge, Eagles
Meat: Venison, Seal
Grain: Wheat Flour, Indian Corn
Vegetables: Pumpkin, Peas, Beans, Onions, Lettuce, Radishes, Carrots
Fruit: Plums, Grapes
Nuts: Walnuts, Chestnuts, Acorns
Herbs and Seasonings: Olive Oil, Liverwort, Leeks, Dried Currants, Parsnips
h3. What Was Not on the Menu
Surprisingly,
the following foods, all considered staples of the modern Thanksgiving
meal, didn't appear on the pilgrims's first feast table:

Ham: There is no evidence that the colonists had butchered a pig by this time, though they had brought pigs with them from England.
Sweet Potatoes/Potatoes: These were not common.
Corn on the Cob: Corn was kept dried out at this time of year.
Cranberry Sauce: The colonists had cranberries but no sugar at this time.
Pumpkin Pie: It's not a recipe that exists at this point, though the pilgrims had recipes for stewed pumpkin.
Chicken/Eggs:
We know that the colonists brought hens with them from England, but
it's unknown how many they had left at this point or whether the hens
were still laying.
Milk: No cows had been aboard the Mayflower, though it's possible that the colonists used goat milk to make cheese.

During my 4 year tour, I made it home for 3 days for the last Christmas. Never made it home for Thanksgiving. As with mjd, I agree with your thoughts as well and with the recent events in Mumbai, we should keep our friends in India in mind as well.

Hope your Tofurkey turned out well. I've been told that if it is done right, you can't tell the difference between that and the real deal as far as taste goes.

Yea Tofurkey is very very realistic. In some resteraunts veggies have sent it back because they simply don't believe it isn't meat. lol

I forgot to make a load of tofu (I make my own tofu I gotta soak soy beans process them then do the tofu making process on the stove). I would need 6 lbs for the recipe I saw before so I would of needed to start earlier lol. No tofurkey for me. Its ok, this is my first Thanksgiving without my family. My mother makes a lot of food and we use the nice china wine in crystal glasses etc. It is very nice my mother loves to cook. This year I don't know I'll probably make a pumpkin pie and then have some (instant) mash potatoes and whatever we can find in the cabinent. I wish I would of gotten some potatos so I could make some potato and onion soup. Takes a while to cook but it is very good.

I love potato soup, and the onions do add a little something to it. I have been known to use instant mashed potatoes when I was too lazy to peel and cut up the potatoes. I have since discovered the Bob Evans refridgeratied all ready to go Potatoes. Just pop them in the Microwave and nuke em and you are good to go. Go through alot of those things around here, in fact that is what was used today. Heck, everything was premade this year. We had a precooked turkey breast, premade giblet gravy. Forgot the stuffing. Even the sweet pototo pie was store bought. I haven't had any yet as I was a bit too full. Andy ( the dog) got the skin from the turkey breast for his Thanksgiving, as usual, and is looking for more. :D Can't please some dogs.

Haha sounds like Chewbacca (they are the ones that look alike right?) He eats and eats and eats he's so gluttonis it is rather one of his more predominant qualities.

I'm finishing up some Thanksgiving meal Jason made me mash potatoes w/mushroom soup gravy, corn with crackers and sugar, mushroom soup green beans and some vegetarian bushes baked beans. I got a pie cooling in the oven too! Unfortunately I didn't want to take the time or make the mess to cut up a pie pumpkin today so I copped out and used a can lol.

Yep, that is the same dog. That sounds like a big meal. The Green beans and Mushroom soup sounds sorta like a Green Bean Casserole, which is pretty good. The Mushroom soup as a gravy for the Mashed Potatoes is a nice touch as well. Sounds like a lot of creativity going on with that meal. Lord knows I've done it many times and it usually turned out pretty well, all things considered. I was scrouging around one time and made some rice. I then added added some slivered almonds & French cut green beans and seasoned it with butter & garlic. It seems if I may have added something else as well, but I can't remember what if I did. I can make a big thing of mac & cheese and it will go for a couple of days ( I make it from scratch ).

Hehe I wonder what type of dog we have that makes it eat so much? The mushroom soup thing is tradition as far as the greenbeans go, wish I had fried onions for it, the gravy is a combo of being lazy and unable to eat most gravy from stores. It's good though I'm going to have some pie now =D

OOPS, forgot about the fried onions. Yep they should be on there alright. Actually, Andy has gotten to where he doesn't want to eat, unless it's people food or his junky treats. I think he is tired of the same old same old as far as his food goes. Been giving him some canned food from time to time for a change and he will eat that ( it is also expensive). He sure does drink some water though. As far as store gravy goes, that stuff is terrible. I usually make my own. There is a local Grocery ( actually it has opened stores in other areas in the State now) that has the best garden Macaroni salad I have ever had. They have their own Central Kitchen where everything is made and then it is delivered to the stores. They also have the best cole slaw as well. I think I could gain ten pounds just standing in the Deli. People come in at noon and get their lunch and sit in the Cafe area to eat. They have outdoor seating as well in warm weather. It was always a local Grocery ( Ukrops), but in recent years has opened stores out the Richmond area. It is considered an upscale Grocery Store and the pricing reflects it. I usually get my groceries at Kroger or Walmart. :D

I love potato soup. When I was over in Texas for my sister's funeral, a friend of hers brought over a container of what she called zesty potato soup. Potatoes, onion flakes, garlic, of course milk and shredded cheese, salt, pepper and a small (4oz) can of chopped green chilies. I have modified it a little, in that I don't put garlic in, and use Mrs. Dash instead of salt, and then add salsa instead of the green chilies. Made a pot the other day.

I keep the kraft Mexican 4 cheese shredded cheese on hand, because many evenings I will make a casserole of rice, LeSeur baby green peas and then cover with shredded cheese. Tonight I have left over Turkey to look forward to as I bought a small pre-cooked piece of Turkey breast. I stayed home yesterday and I think it was a good plan for I feel better today than I have in weeks.
