MY SPECS : -

INTEL PENTIUM D 2.66 GHZ

ASUS P5N-MX MOTHERBOARD

1 X TRANSCEND 2 GB DDR2 667 RAM

MERCURY 8600GT 256 MB GDDR3 GRAPHICS CARD

SAMSUNG 160 GB SATA II HARD DISK
SONY 20X ATA/IDE DVD WRITER

IBALL 400 WATT PSU

INTEX 600 VA UPS

RECENTLY I REPLACED MY OLD MOTHERBOARD ASUS P5GZ-MX WITH ASUS P5N-MX. EVERYTHING WORKED FINE FOR TWO DAYS WHEN SUDDENLY AFTER PRESSING THE POWER BUTTON, COMPUTER DID NOT BOOT AND IN TURN TURNED OFF AFTER 2 - 3 SECONDS. THIS PROBLEM THEN OCCURED RANDOMLY, I MEAN AFTER MANY TRIES IT BOOTED UP AND EVERYTHING WORKED FINE. AFTER COMING TO DESKTOP EVERYTHING WORKS FINE AND DOES NOT SHUTS DOWN OR RESTART ON ITS OWN. THINKING IT OF BIOS PROBLEM I FLASHED THE BIOS TO THE NEWEST VERSION AVAILABLE FOR THE BOARD FROM ASUS WEBSITE. BUT IN VAIN THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. I CHECKED ALL MY CONNECTIONS, TOOK OUT MY RAM AND CLEANED IT BUT IT DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. SO DECIDED TO TAKE MY PSU TO IBALL SERVICE CENTRE FOR CHECKING IT. THEY REPAIRED IT BUT STILL THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. THEN I DECIDED TO REPLACE IT WITH A NEW PSU BECAUSE IT HAD WARRANTY BUT STILL MY PC DOES NOT STARTUP AT ONE TRY. THIS PROBLEM IS VERY RANDOM. I HAVE TRIED TO CONNECT DIRECTLY TO POWER SUPPLY WITHOUT CONNECTING TO THE UPS BUT STILL THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THAT THE TIME WHEN I PUSH MY POWER BUTTON MY PROCESSOR FAN RESPONDS AND ROTATES FOR THAT 2-3 SECONDS TIME SPAN. NOW I AM CONFUSED..........DON'T KNOW WHICH COMPONENT OF MY PC IS DAMAGED. KINDLY HELP ME OUT............SHALL BE VERY GRATEFUL TO ANY SUGGESTIONS OR TIPS. THANK YOU.

Hi and welcome to the forum. It looks as though you have gone after the usual suspects, as my first thought was the PSU. It could be the switch on the case that is malfunctioning, but that is admittedly, a long shot. It doesn't appear to be running long enough when this happens to be an over heating issue, besides you said the problem is intermittant in nature. The only thing I can think off is to recheck your processor and make sure it is seated properly. I can tell you from past experience, that that can be a bad thing to say the least, as it may be seemingly running fine, it will be scrambling flies to point of not being able to repair them, not to mention blowing the processor. coastie65

i am also suspecting the problem to be switch or switch power cables related. but if its processor problem, then will resetting the processor do???

i have also tried booting with only hard disk and ram connected and removed all other components but did not work.

Ram is working fine becoz i have tried in my friend's computer.

the problem is very random. when it starts up works fine for how much time you may work, but when it starts showing this problem after around 20 times of try, it boots up properly !!!!

You sain you had a Pentium D running at 2.66 Ghz. Probably an 805. Check to see that the notches on the processor line up with the the ears on the socket, they can be hard to see. coastie

Check the power connections from the PSU to the Motherboard. The long atx connecter on the mobo with be either 20 pins or 20+4 pins. There will an additional 4 pin or 6 pin connector as well. make sure they are properly plugged in. coastie

Don't worry, I quote my own text some times too, but here's your warning. Now, fix it.

Hi, If you notice in my Signature, I too have an 8600 GT Video card and am running a 500w PSU. If budget is a concern, you can do well with a 450w PSU, particularly if you are using a lot of USB devices. As for the PSU in there, you probably got a bad one, as I don't think I've ever heard of a MOBO killing a PSU. coastie

Hey guys back after a long time. actually I didn't get my problem solved..so decided to replace the P5N-MX motherboard and i got the new one 3 days back. but still the problem is continuing!!!
Ram Checked OK
Hard Disk Checked OK
Graphics Card Checked OK
PSU OK
Only left are Processor and my Cabinet.
Please Help!!
Also i have noticed one thing with my 4-pin ATX 12V Power connector...the one connected near the processor. I removed all my components except processor and then also the problem occured but when i removed that 4-pin connector, the problem didn't occur!! So I checked it for nearly 20-25 times and the problem didn't occur. but as soon as i put it back the problem starts occuring randomly. Also another thing I have noticed that this problem never occurs when I start my computer on back up mode of UPS.

Hi, First, That PSU is a tad light at 400w, in my opinion, although should work. When you installed the MOBO, did you use steel standoffs between the board and case? Those things can cause a short. It is recommended to use Plastic / Nylon standoffs to prevent that. Some cases come with the mounts already in and there isn't much you can do in that case. coastie

After reading through all the symptoms and the steps you've taken to resolve this problem, I must agree that the 400 watt P/S is a bit under powered for your unit and the compnents installed. One thing that strikes me is the number of times that this power supply may have been plugged and unplugged on the board. I have seen a number of power supply connectors go bad and cause some real flaky problems. Re-tensioning the pins to insure a solid connection would resolve this, but being that the amount of power it can provide may be the real issue here. A good close inspection of the video card is also called for, as I have had a number of them become intermittent because of bad capacitors that gave the same problems as what you're experiencing. Good luck

I have checked my case and I have rubber standoffs mounted between case and board. But I am suspecting that some of my motherboard screws might be touching my case or something!!
