I recently was the victim of a terrible virus. In an effort to backup my
files I installed my hard drive on another computer and took ownership
of all of the contents of the C: drive. The problem is that I also took
ownership of my desktop. My problem is that now that I have performed a repair install
on my computer with the virus when I place my drive in all of my files come up as
access denied. I can log into windows however the desktop is denied and so are all of my files and
folders. I can only run command prompts and task manager. Any help would be
greatly appreciated!! Thanks

Hi eazy and welcome to the forum. First, if you were infected, you took the wrong steps. The first thing you should ahve done would have been a removal of the infection. By backing up your files, you have exacerbated the situation, as in all likelyhood, you have transferred the infection with the files, and have accomplished nothing. Your only alternative now is probably to do a reformat and reinstall of the OS and drivers. When you are infected or suspect an infection, you should download and run these two apps. www.malwarebytes.org & www.SUPERantispyware.com . These are very good and FREE. coastie65

Maybe I wasnt clear. After running spyware removal and adware removal I deleted system files. I backed up some of my files by removing the drive from the previously infected computer and hooking it up as a slave drive to a new computer. THAT IS NOT MY ISSUE. My problem is that when I connected the drive to the new computer I had to take ownership of the c: drive. Now that My windows has been restored on the previously infected computer I can not access the c: drive because the other computer that I used to transfer files still has ownership. My question is, How do I undo ownership or restore it to a previous state?

OK, assuming computer "A" was the previously infected computer and Computer "B" is the new computer. When yout ook the drive from "A" and hooked it up as slave on "B" and loaded the OS on it from "B", the OS had the hardware profile of "B" which is different from that of "A" and most likely the source of the problem. When you install a Windows Operating system on a computer, it takes a "Snapshot" of the hardware configuration of the computer. If you make a major change inthe hardware such as a new motherboard, you will have to get a new license from Microsoft in order for it to work as you have made a hardware change and doesn't match the hardware associated with that which was registered with the COA for that OS. I know of no work around except for a reformat and reinstallation of the OS in "A". coastie

I received a new product key from microsoft to reinstall media center on computer a and I am able to log in fine. My only issue is that explorer.exe will not open and my desktop is disabled to to the error"access denied" I am sure this is because I changed the ownership of the files to computer b. I just need to find out the dos prompt or cmd prompts to reclaim ownership of the c: drive (where my desktop files are stored) on computer a again
