I'm a real neophyte and I am trying to find out if it is possible to use a voip plan with my satellite internet? I've tried calling my server (Hughesnet) and have been unable to either connect with some I could understand or new anything about it. is this possible? Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

latency on sattelite is really long, so if you like waiting...

and idk how much bandwidth is needed for voip but it will probably be about 56k (upstream)

Generally speaking, VoIP will work over any reliable "high-speed" Internet connection... including Satellite.
However, satellite Internet may suffer excessive signal propagation delays and "latency". Many people find the excessive latency objectionable and not suitable for normal conversations. However, if you were to adopt a "Simplex" method of talking over the phone (like with 2-way radio), then it is viable... but may take some getting used to.

Typically, broadband VoIP only requires ~ 110 Kbps Upload/download bandwidth, when using G.711u codec. However, when using G.729a codec, it is "possible" to get by with as little as 56 Kbps connection.
