All sounds so easy. However, we have had many victims from our site go to the police with zero result other than the clueless police BLAME THE VICTIM. And the FBI has told us and some of our victims they are backed up 2-3 years on some cases.
Our big advice? Issue a CEASE & DESIST again the cyberstalker/ harasser. You can do them yourself if you are savvy enough. If you know the perpetrator's address you should send it return receipt and registered so you have a record they received it.
Once that's done, send the C&D to the police & the FBI - usually that gets their attention.
If you can afford a lawyer, see if you can have a Restraining Order issued. And you can sue for "INTENTIONAL INFLICTION OF EMOTIONAL DISTRESS."
Many websites don't even answer you - which makes this sort of crime even more deplorable.

I love the Craigslist example, this is exactly what happened to me; although it was not a scorned lover. This woman had posted many nasty and untrue things about me in the Erotica section of Craigslist. I started receiving many phone calls from same sex individuals asking if the ads were true, asking to hook up etc. I finally got one of those individuals to tel me where the ad was located, I also sent a notification to Craigs List via the approved method as described in this story. After a few hours of receiving calls I also contacted Craig and Clint Powell (his Cstr Svs Mgr), it took hours to finally have them remove the post. Built into Craigs List is a ability to remove posts by individuals but unless many people decide its offending that post is there to stay. Moral of this story, the post finally disappeared after hours of posts, emails, and trying to call Craigs List (do not suggest that either, even less helpful there). Hopefully with a new year we will have a year of better support for those individuals who are victims of either scorned lovers, Ex's or crude pranks. Its not Craig's (the man) fault for this problem; this responsibility lies on Clint and his staff of those who could care less.

I had my 'ex' and his family do something in the same vein, but it was on MySpace. They publicly posted vicious slander, and when I reported it to MySpace admin, they took it down, only to have ex and his sister put it back up. I reported them again, and it was taken down again.

I have read many comments but the one to always remember is sooooooo simple...
"Sticks and Stones may break your bones, but Words will never hurt you." Civil Liberties experts agree very difficult to regulate what could be considered opinion or free speech and attempts to muzzle are routinely thrown out of courts.

Free speech is great, but much of this sounds like libel and slander, which is against the law, is it not? I suppose the task then is proving libel/slander...

I've chanced occation to notify some web sites that the offending URL is a violation of my right to privacy and published without my expressed consent or approval. Followed that with just the mention of filing a liable suite against the web site and the URL and ISP of the poster is permanently blocked.

Worked both times I did it.
