This was a great article! Thanks! One thing, however, you'll need to make sure that iTunes is set to import using the .aac format. Without it, the "create AAC Version" will not be there. I used this tip just about 20 min ago (after changing my import version to .AAC) and it works great!!

Very good article, I wanted to use the Who's "Who are you" as my default ringtone, you can no longer "buy" it from Apple. Your directions worked very well except I had to change the file extension to M4R, M4A did not work, it only put it back into my music library. Once I changed the extension to M4R and double clicked it it went to the "Ringtone" section of the library. Sync'd the iPhone and there it was.

You must not have read the second-to-last step, where I did indeed mention changing the file extension. :8}

:0 My mistake, I miss-read it as either M4A or M4R.

Hey mate, I'm using vista and am trying to do this the way you explain but the created ringtone isn't appearing in my sounds folder where you select your ringtone from a list. The new 30 sec clip is appearing in ringtones in itunes but after i sync it, i get another exact copy of the WHOLE song in the Ipod song list. any light you are able to shed on the situation?

Cheers

I've seen these instructions in a few different locations and I'm thankful for all of them. One other thing that I noticed that none of the articles seem to mention... It is not possible to start the song from any point you decide ie. Start Time - 0:32, End Time - 1:02 ... or is there??? Changing the start time did not work for me.

If you are using Vista, under the info tag in iTunes, make sure the name, album artist, album are filled in. Does not have to be correct, just filled in.

Wish I could give you an answer, but I'm not a Mac user. Any Mac folks care to chime in?

I don't see why it would not work, but then I cannot test it...don't have an iPhone.

I have followed the instructions and was able to put the ringtones on my iPhone, but now I have a problem. Since I have converted three songs over to a ring tone, all three songs now only play for 30 seconds on my iPod, did I do something wrong or how to I correct this?

I figured it out. In order to sync up properly you must first delete the 30 second AAC version you created. Once that it deleted, then you can drag the new m4r file into the library and it will sync as a ringtone. That also solves your problem of having the song only play for 30 seconds, as its the AAC version and not the real one playing. Give that a shot ought to solve it

I know this Thread is old but I thought I would comment and give you guys some feedback...

1) Yes this works for the Mac too ... however there is no option to "convert to AAC" when you right click the song for the second time....the option is in the toolbar at the top under "advanced".

2) I had a problem with getting it to sync to my iPhone too...what I realised the problem was I didn't have sync ringtones selected. click the iPhone from the left bar on iTunes and there should be tabs at the top e.g. Summary / Info /Apps / Ringtones etc. Click the Ringtone tab and check the Sync Ringtones box.

I did this all today and it still works even on the 3gs iPhone.

Hope that helps
