Everything worked great.. Song shows in "tones" and the box in tones is checked to sync; but when I try to sync with iphone I get an error message that says" song cannot be downloaded to iPhone as file cannot be found"... but it is clearly there.

Added note: Sooo much easier on a Mac... :)

I've seen these instructions in a few different locations and I'm thankful for all of them. One other thing that I noticed that none of the articles seem to mention... It is not possible to start the song from any point you decide ie. Start Time - 0:32, End Time - 1:02 ... or is there??? Changing the start time did not work for me.

It has worked for me

How do you change the m4a into a m4r?

Go to the folder, click organize > folder and search options, click the view tab and uncheck "hide extension for known file types" then right the file you want to change and click rename.

Hi I would like to thank all of you guys for helping..... but still m in trouble though i tried created the ringtone with these steps but when i locate that AAC Version in windows explorer it is still the same song with 30 seconds length it is not the ringtone and even if i rename is (e.g. brimbe.m4r) and triend grabbing it to tones in my itunes it is sill of no use it is not accepting it in ringtone and thus not syncing in my iphone 5. :'( m gone crazy doing same from last two days PLEASE HELP how to do this caz i am folowing all the steps here still it appeRS AS A SONG IN WINDOWS EXPLORER

I faced same problem when i renamed the tone from m4a to m4r. even after renaming the file to m4r file tipe remained in mp3 format sound.
Follow the below steps to change the extension from m4a to m4r;
1. Go to folder
2. Select Folder option in Tools menu or Folder & Search option from Organide tab
3. Click the "View" tab
4. Uncheck the "hide extension for known file types"
5. Click OK
Now you'll see file name with extensions (e.g., grid.m4a) which you've to change to m4r (eg., grid.m4r).
Once you change the extension mp3 format sound will be changed/converted to ringtone.

You need to uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" in Tools>Folder options>View tab.

Nice tips for getting ringtones! I always use a video converter to make ringtones, you can just convert the AAC or MP3 files into M4A that the iPhone loves. Found a nice little software, Reincubate Video Converter, that also has editing features so it also changes audio channels (mono or stereo), bitrate or sample rate if you need it.

Almost everything works fine. I make the AAC, change the extension, put it back into iTunes, etc. It shows up in the tones section in iTunes, and it says it syncs, but when I try to find it on my phone, it isn't in the ringtones section.

What I had to do was right click on the AAC version and select Show in Windows Explorer. Then I can put it into the folder I want and be able to find it after the move.
