Go to the folder, click organize > folder and search options, click the view tab and uncheck "hide extension for known file types" then right the file you want to change and click rename.

I faced same problem when i renamed the tone from m4a to m4r. even after renaming the file to m4r file tipe remained in mp3 format sound.
Follow the below steps to change the extension from m4a to m4r;
1. Go to folder
2. Select Folder option in Tools menu or Folder & Search option from Organide tab
3. Click the "View" tab
4. Uncheck the "hide extension for known file types"
5. Click OK
Now you'll see file name with extensions (e.g., grid.m4a) which you've to change to m4r (eg., grid.m4r).
Once you change the extension mp3 format sound will be changed/converted to ringtone.

What I had to do was right click on the AAC version and select Show in Windows Explorer. Then I can put it into the folder I want and be able to find it after the move.
