This article says all you need to do is manually change the file extension.

Hello

Firstly, this comment and step 8 are vague. I am assuming you mean click on the icon and change the name by typing it in right?

Also, I don't have a "ringtone" tab in itunes! What should I do?

Thanks!!

Ignore me, I did it! YAY!

You people ROCK!

Cheers! B)

Glad you figured it out. The article I linked to gave the few steps needed to change a file's file type. It's a little more than changing the file name - you need to get the file extension to display first.

Or you can use GeoRing app to change your ringtone to any song in your iTunes library with just a few taps. Unlike other ringtone-making apps, GeoRing doesn't require iTunes syncing, which means your phone can ring with any song, instantly. Plus, create a Ringtone Playlist and hear a new ringtone every time. GeoRing randomly picks a song from your playlist when your phone rings. No other app makes ringing so much fun. You can find GeoRing in the App Store.

On my DroidX I can just download an mp3 and set it as a ringtone. Yet on my iPhone, I have to go through all these hoops? I thought Apple products were supposed to be simple. WTF?

another way is to right click the song at Itunes, then copy and then open a folder in your documents and paste it. Theo at internet find AUDIKO and load the song into it and you can make a ringtone for iphone

All seems good except that my phone wont sync from the i tunes ringtone to the phone ringtone.
Everything has been done.
I don't see any Custom ringtone box on my phone, I just have'standard box.
Any clues for me please.

This article I linked to earlier in the discussion says all you need to do is rename the file type. Open up Windows Explorer (My Computer) and go into Tools > Folder Options. On the view tab, un-check the box to "Hide extensions for known file types." You can now see the file type, so just rename the file from song1.m4a to song1.m4r After you've changed the file type, you can recheck that box to hide file type extensions again. Typically, you would need to use special conversion software to encode the file differently. Apparently m4a and m4r files are so similar that special software isn't necessary.

That is also what step 8 of the original article for this thread says to do.

Very good article, I wanted to use the Who's "Who are you" as my default ringtone, you can no longer "buy" it from Apple. Your directions worked very well except I had to change the file extension to M4R, M4A did not work, it only put it back into my music library. Once I changed the extension to M4R and double clicked it it went to the "Ringtone" section of the library. Sync'd the iPhone and there it was.

It is said that you have to do this in the article.
