Thanks for the help. What I did was cut the song in wavepad and tried to sync it directly to the iphone. I miss a step to make into a ringtone. Thanks for this.

I guess iOS5 really doesn't eliminate the need for iTunes on your machine. Thank goodness for the Sprint 30 return policy. I need to go back to a phone that just turns into a simple USB storage device and lets me copy files to well-labeled folders to handle ringtones, pictures, etc. That, to me, is the definition of user friendly.
I had a heck of a time trying to get my wallpapers on my iPhone too. They were standard JPG's. Needed to set a shared folder within iTunes, copy the files to that folder, then sync the phone to get those silly little JPG's on the phone.
This isn't worth it. I can't even imagine what it will take when I want to copy some PDF's to read on the road.
Definitely returning this phone...
This is my first iPhone. It's a 4S. What a disappointment that I have to go through all of this to just get a ringtone to work. (I have to thank the author of this article for his hacking ability... Nice work. Too bad it is needed.)

Yah right, like these instructions are really that difficult. You have a Windows mindset and you don't want to budge. I switched from PC to Mac (and Android to iPhone) a year ago. It took some getting used to, but now I'm much happier. Many many fewer headaches. However, it sounds like you just want to continue to live in that world... so enjoy your blue screens, UAC, crappy network stack, hard to configure or connect devices, and Android viruses... as I said, headaches!

Hello
Firstly, this comment and step 8 are vague. I am assuming you mean click on the icon and change the name by typing it in right?
Also, I don't have a "ringtone" tab in itunes! What should I do?
Thanks!!
Ignore me, I did it! YAY!
You people ROCK!
Cheers!
I can't figure it out!!

Not being able to sync after you have checked the box to sync ringtones.
Your ringtone and song title can't be the same. As soon as I changed the title of the song (cuz I couldnt change the title of the ringtone) it synced right away!
One issue that I had - that I did not see answered in here was:

.Note 2: if some one can not find the file extension, just open windows: Tool/Folders options, then tap view and choose: show hidden files and folders, uncheck hide extention for known file types.
