Just tried this, works great! Although you can't use this technique on mp3's that you have downloaded from Itunes itself!

I had BIIIG problems with this, until i realized that i was (In iTunes) working on the copy on my iPhone. I could not get the convert to AAC to show..! As soon as i realized and went for the file on my hard drive it worked straight on.
So make sure youre working on the right file. Thank's.

I can't rename the extension because I go into the properties in the file on my computer and rename it ringtone.m4r it just does ringtone.m4r.m4a

You need to open up Folder Options (found in the Tools menu), then the View tab, and remove the checkmark next to "Hide extensions for known file types." Afterward, you can see the filename and extension as "ringtone.m4a" which you can then change to "ringtone.m4r" Hide file type extensions afterward.

As a point of note, I had my iTunes set to import CDs as MP3 so right-clicking showed a 'Convert to MP3' option instead of 'Convert to AAC'. I had to go into the Preferences and change the CD Import settings to AAC. Also the tone shows up in iTunes but does not transfer to the phone when I sync :(

I just did it on my Mac and it worked perfectly. "Pocketful of Sunshine". I put it on as my ringtone ironically - for those of you who know the inside joke. Anywhoo - I have used "Who are You" by The Who in the past. I agree it is an excellent ring tone.

I had lost my favorite ringtone when I synced iTunes music to my iPhone. I'm glad I found this website again. I followed the instructions and I have my ringtone back again!!! I've bookmarked this site! Thank you, Mr. Broida!!
