I downloaded The Foxmarks Bookmark Syncronizer recommended by Rick Broida in the latest issue. When I try to open and install it, however, I get the error message "Windows cannot open this file: "foxmarksbookmarksynchronizer-2.6.0-fx.xpi". It indicates Windows doesn't recognize the file type, "xpi".

Has anyone else installed this program?

Thanks.

Hi UncleW. From where exactly did you download this application? Also, was the download application the .xpi file or was it an .exe file?

Hey MPH, how are you?

I clicked the link in PCW Downloads which took me to Mozilla's Firefox Add-ons site. The downloaded file bore the .xpi extension.

Ahhh, that explains it. I gather you are not using Firefox as your main browser. The .xpi file you downloaded is actually a Firefox Add-On. If you do the same process but use Firefox, this is what you will see:

Once you click on "Add to Firefox," a separate window appear. A few moments after that, the "Install Now" button will become available and the Add-On will install directly into Firefox.

Just an update. I just installed this application into Firefox with no problem. Once Firefox restarted, Foxmarks automatically started up and walked me through the syncing process.

Posted Image Doh! I should have tried it in FF before posting. My only excuse- I read that the program works with FF and IE so I didn't think it mattered.

Thanks MPH. Next time I'll try to make sure my brain is in gear before posting ;)

Hi UncleW. I can see why this application is so popular. I have a Dual Boot system (Windows XP & Windows Vista). I installed the syncronizer while I was using Vista. I restarted the computer in Windows XP and, after a few steps, was able to sync the passwords and bookmarks. Very cool.

MPH, it is a handy app. I've got hundreds of Bookmarks/ Favorites on my desktop and laptop. I back them up on a USB drive I keep with me so I can access them pretty much anywhere but with this utility all I need to do is go online.

I couldn'tna done it widdoutcha ;) ;)
