I currently use CA's Internet Suite, with XP Pro, ( it came free with my Road Runner Turbo) I did turn off the firewall and instead I use ZoneAlarm Pro's Firewall. I have been using this combination plus many antispyware and antimalware programs with really no bad things ever happening for several years. ( well there was that "Fakealert.exe" that tried to sneak thru but I caught it ) .
Now while I feel pretty well protected, I think I'm being bogged down by all the processes that are running in the background by CA. I deleted CA for a short scary period of unprotected internet surfing and I noticed a big pick up in hopping from site to site and just in general opening and closing of different programs and app's on my Rig.

Does anybody have any Advise/Opinion on what would be a better alternative ( free or paid ) for a better Antivirus program that isn't such a resource Hog like CA ?

I've used McApee and Nortan and I felt that they were both doing the same thing, sucking surf speed.

Note: I do have the Option with Zone Alarm Pro, to use Kapesky's Antivirus Program, any Advise/Opinion and Resource Consumption Rate on that combination of security " ?

Kaspersky is a good app, although a subscription one, I think. I am using Avast! which seems to be pretty quiet in the background, You should only be running ONE antivirus app and ONE antispyware app actively. You can have others installed for a redundant scan capability though. As far as a firewall goes, I am just using windows as far as the software Firewall goes as well as a Hardware firewall in the router. If you have too many firewalls running, it can completely block your access to the internet. Although I have multi security apps in here, I am only running Avast! and Spysweeper actively. coastie65

Thanks for the input about Kapersky, I have the option to install the full version for free, (it comes with Zone Alarm Pro Internet suite which I own ). I use Avast at my Job and over the last 2 years we've been hit/wiped/lockedout 4 times. Luckly theres not any much to lose because its backed up daily. I DO happen to have a lot to lose, 580GB's worth. So I won't be going to Avast, trust me.

But thanks for the opinion on Kapersky.

I find that interesting as I have never had any problems with Avast! and have never really heard of any. It is pretty highly rated as well. coastie

I also scan my drive with SuperAntispyware and it is a great program, a little slow at times but gets some stuff that my antispyware programs miss. ( i.e. probably why it's a little slower ).

But I'm staying away from Avast. (read above).

Thanks for the reply

Hey Coastie do you know if AVG antivirus & Avast can run side by side ? Like at the same time ? I know both are a lot less on resources combined than the HOG that CA is.

No. You should never run those things at the same time as it will do more harm than good and degrade your protection. As for SUPERantispyware, I have that installed as well and use it as a redundant scan to Spysweeper. I also have malwarebytes in here as well which is very good for picking up the nasty stuff. coastie

:D Hi :

It is based on my Recommendation that many of the "regular" Posters on this Site use

Avast, though it is their FREE "Home Edition"; I am also a "regular" Volunteer Poster on the

Avast Online Support Forums, so I was surprised by your using Avast "at the job" and

being "hit/wiped/lockout" 4 times in 2 yrs, whatever that might mean !? It is "situations"

like that that Avast's Online Support Forums should be used . Any since occurred "at

the job", I assume a version other than the "Home Edition" was being used !? I doubt

it was Avast doing the hitting, wiping, or locking out, but some malware that you blame

Avast as causing .

Except under unusual circumstances, should NEVER have 2 antiVIRUS programs on a

computer at any moment in time, although it is ok to run an antiVIRUS's ONLINE Scanner.

AVG & Avast on the same computer do NOT qualify for the unusual circumstances .

IF you are willing to PAY for the Best antiVIRUS program, choose the top-performing

NOD32 from Eset Software ; Kaspersky's quality seems to have fallen off in recent months .
