New user on these boards. I had to register and post because I was so shocked over an article in February's magazine. On page 77, there is an article titled "Stop Your Neighbors From Stealing Your Wi-Fi Bandwidth." The article's overall statement regarding wireless security is that MAC address filtering is the only security measure you need to take when securing your home wireless network. That is completely false. It's widely acknowledged among industry leaders that MAC address filtering is the weakest form of wireless security, and by itself provides almost no protection from a persitent hacker. MAC spoofing is about the easiest hack to learn. MAC filtering should be used in combination with static IP address assignments, SSID name changing and WPA2 encryption.
Just search the web on wifi security and read articles from the wifi alliance, from Netgear, Cisco, cnet, all the industry leaders on wifi security and wireless protocols, and you will see that MAC filtering is good to turn on, but by no means the only method of security anyone should implement.
This article's advice is irresponsible and just plain incorrect.
