Hi all:

I've just purchased a "My Book" external hardrive, which comes with 30 day trial version of Memeo Autobackup software. If I want to keep it, I must pay $30. Your editors have recommended Paragon Drive Express freeware, (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,73569-order,3-page,1/description.html), which I'll probably switch to when this expires. Here're my questions:

1.) Should I "uninstall" Memeo before installing Paragon, or is there value in keeping it and whatever data organization it did on my drive?

2.) If I'm going to uninstall it, should I just do that now and not wait the 30 days?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If I'm correct, the Memeo Autobackup software is simply a trial program urging as a tempt to spend $30. You don't necessarily need to keep the Memeo software unless the drive requires the program to be installed in order to use all features effectively. I highly doubt that.

For 2.) , the choice is up to you. If you like the software, use it until the trial ends, and then uninstall the app ; however, all you did was buy the drive itself for storage. The company is offering another way for you to SPEND money, by giving you a trial program that seems appealing, all you want is to use the drive as a storage device.

That's what I thought. It should work without this, right, so this is just an opportunity to spend $30 on a program I don't need. Thanks.

You are absolutely correct.

After the trial ends, I would recommend a removal of the TRIAL program and install the Paragon Backup program.

Come back if you have more questions.

Should I erase everything from the external hard drive first? At this point, there's nothing there but the data put there by Memeo.

It doesn't matter if you erase the hard drive first or leave it. The drive was already pre-formatted before you purchased it. If the only data on the hard drive consists of the Memeo software, you can simply delete those files without completely erasing the hard drive.

The choice is really up to you.
