The "Search" function on pcworld.com needs to be improved. There is no "Advanced Search" to allow you to specify more options. The results returned are often irrelevant, and include results from a long-time ago. It is rare for this subject matter when one desires results from more than a few years ago - most of that is obsolete. Basic search should act like Google - the more terms you include, the fewer results should show up. (That is, the default logical operator between search terms should be "AND", not "OR". I have found it very difficult to find things even when I have the print copy of the article right in front of me. Even putting quotes around a sentence often does not turn up the article.

You are absolutely right about that. I've said it many times, too. I usually use Google to search PC World. You can type in your search terms the same way as you normally would for a web search, but you add "site:pcworld.com" without quotation marks to the end. That invariably renders better results.
Edit: I no longer use Google because of privacy concerns of which I was aware before, but now I can fulfill my needs otherwise. I now use ixquick and when I need a Google search, I use Scroogle.

Hi Sjpschmid. Are you referring to the search functionality of the PCWorld.com main site or the PCWorld.com Community site?

Hi,

Thanks for your message.

We're aware that our search needs improvements, and we are working on that.

The silly thing is, if you type in exactly what you are searching for, it misses it.

That's true unless you put the search terms in quotation marks. That's the only way I've ever found what I'm looking for with their search engine.

Google it. Try this in the search box...

site:pcworld.com (search terms)

There are a lot of site's whose built in search sucks. That is why I tend to use Google. For example, as much a like Apple and believe they do a lot of things right, I ALWAYS have trouble with their search on their site. I can generally find something faster on their site by using Google.
