Have been unable to install this update (SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services Service Pack 3) on Vista after four attempts.
Googled and found the problem rather widespread with no solution. Here we go again.

Let me ask you this did you download it or buy it off of a online store?

What type of error message are you getting? What version of Vista are you using? I assume you are logged on as an administror, right?

Then maybe just turn of UAC and then turn it back on once the software is installed. Without the exact error message I cannot readialy tell what the exact problem is.

This file is part of Vista's ongoing window's update.

There's no error message; KB955706 simply won't install despite having been downloaded and multiple install attempts.

And worse yet, Vista is saying it has been installed each time I've attempted to (without success).

I run Vista Home Premium SP1 and always log in as administrator. UAC is always off. You think that if I turn it on, the update will install?

Hi Klaatu. I really do not think UAC is the issue. I, like you, have my UAC off and I have never had any issues with updates in Windows Vista. I think there may be a registry issue here...one hand not shaking with the other. I say this because, on one hand, Windows Updates believes you still need to install update KB955706. On the other hand, I see at least seven successful installations of this update.

You stated that others have this same issue with this update. Since I do not have SQL Server 2005, I cannot test this on my end. What are some of the recommended states that you have seen so far?

Are these updates the ones that Microsoft suggested that you download or are they "extra" updates?

You know how in XP if you are an administrator and go to Windows Update that MS gave you a list of "extra" updates to install. Is that what that list of updates are or are they ligitimate to the health of the OS?

I for one do not run Vista at home, however, I have just googled it and came up with the weblink for the tech description of the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services Service Pack 3 from their website. The URL is: www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=b448b0d0-ee79-48f6-b50a-7c4f028c2e3d&displaylang=en. If that doesn't help I would check my system rescources and hardware because as you know Vista is a rescource hog.

So everything you have done makes since, any hardware or software changes to your system lately? I assume that SP1 installed without a hitch. Perhaps what you could do is "roll back" to before the problem began to occur or uninstall and reinstall SP1. If none of these help, your only option maybe to reinstall the system. Is this an OEM build by the way?

Best of luck with this. Even after nearly 4 years MS still has glitches in their OS. Well that's MS for you.

I simply googled KB955706 service pack 3 and came across others who've had this issue.

Found Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 site with full download so will probably install and uninstall just to eliminate problem. Don't create any data-driven applications for web or local desktop development so not sure why it's installed at all.

Downloaded, installed and uninstalled SQL SP3. Ran a few registry cleanup programs and have found no ill effects.

So that this won't happen again, changed Windows Update to alert about updates but not to download nor install w/o permission.

Final issue is regarding the never-to-be-used 55.7MB update download. Once again, googled "Vista update download folder" and found that updates are stored in "C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution." Advice was that although Vista keeps downloaded and other related files in %windir%SoftwareDistribution, one should not to mess too much with this folder.

Okay, won't mess too much with it but what about the wasted 55.7MB and other potential space lost on downloads that have already been installed or never were at all?
