I have one of the new MacBooks with the latest OS.
I have some games, but I need one particular type to complete my major needs for "killing time" when I'm tired of all the serious work.
What I'm looking for is something along the lines of the Doom series (or Castle Wolfenstein, though Doom was better). The key elements that attract me are:
1. Single player gaming (I don't care about online gaming).
2. No complicated story line you have to follow.
3. No details to work out where you better "talk to" the npc to get critical info or else you can't solve a problem.
4. Any weapon will work against the various monsters - some may be better than others, but you aren't limited by rigid rules. This adds to the gameplay because I can go back and replay the game limited myself to lesser weapons (the strategy for dealing with monsters when you only - or almost only - use a chainsaw is quite different!).
5. Fairly big - like doom. Lots of levels in each episode of the game and muliple episodes.
6. Doesn't matter what order you do things in (might be a couple exceptions, but in general) - you don't have to worry about doing one thing which blocks you from doing something else necessary later.
7. Not real fond of "bosses". Yes, Doom has them, but you go a LONG way to reach them and normally only when finishing the last episode did you reach a boss which was so unbelievably hard that a cheat was needed - if anyone has legitimately beaten some of those, I sure can't imagine how!
8. Also not a lot of complication in controls. Doom allows for quick change of weapons without limiting how many you can carry. Sure, you have niceties like "strafe mode", but you really don't need to use it to win (just like you don't need all the weapons).
I don't need Doom, Final Doom, Ultimate Doom for the Mac because even with the ability to keep it interesting in various ways, I have played it to death on a PC. But something like that would be great.
So, is there anything like that for the Mac?
I have seen sites that have games like Doom or Quake, etc, listed, but I don't understand the deal on them. I mean, I see things that say it requires the original game (if I had the original game, why would I need these things?). But if any legitimate (legal) games that are no longer on the market can be gotten online for free, that would be nice too!

This link may help you find some. http://www.gamespot....ews&sortdir=asc
Change game category to view most popular ones for the mac. I had a quick look at the list in FPS,RPG,action and couldnt mind many new games. One good one that is there and that i have played (on PC) is Call of duty 4. Its a good FPS game, no monsters here. Its based on war. The single player part is relatively short.See if there is a demo for the game available that you can try.

I played the first Call of Duty on a PC. It was okay, but didn't have the replay value of Doom, etc.
Your comment about #4 not having a long single player option is very useful - and something that doesn't get brought out much in reviews or descriptions of new games which seem to focus on the online aspects.
Did a quick scan of the link (I'll look more after work) and it will be good for having a good list, but might be hard to find that kind of info based on a couple I read. But it's a start!

Have you played Quake 4?
I've thought about that one before, but haven't been able to find much out about it. A lot of modern games either don't have single player modes or that mode doesn't offer much (someone told me Call of Duty 4 didn't have much in the single player part).

Spore is another one I've thought about, but the descriptions never were that clear to me and I never saw it.
I do know it was very popular so I guess I'll look into it some more. It didn't sound like it was like what I was talking about (comparing with something like Doom), but maybe I'm wrong.
Thanks.

Nope. I am kind of the opposite of you...I tend to like to do FPS games that take advantage of online play. Single person player tends to be too "linear" to me...nominally the same all the time. Online play is fun as you never know where some other online player will be. Plus, my one buddy and I would sometime play online together and try to frag each other.
I am also not a huge FPS player (I did get "suckered" into Unreal Tournament 2004 for a while...playing in the expansive environments with vehicles was kind of fun). I tend to like games like Diablo and Diablo II more (looking forward to Diablo III coming out).
