Hey Ski. Nop.....Google Browser is even worse than FF & IE7.
My one last solution ...:

* Use Revo Uninstall for all toolbars and browsers ...... try IE7 ( As Coastie suggests ) .: www.revouninstaller.com/

* Uninstall all AV but Avast for now.

* Use Ccleaner for all junks...: [http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/] and all Bad/Broken registties.

* Use Disk defrag. This one should works...: [http://www.download.com/Auslogics-Disk-Defrag/3000-2094_4-10567503.html]

* Use Registry Defrag........................................: [http://www.download.com/Auslogics-Registry-Defrag/3000-2094_4-10678033.html] This will create a system restore point that you need for next step.

* Use Xp disk clean up to clean out all but last "system restore" ...
Start .... My Copmuter ..... Right click on Hdd ......Properties ......disk cleanup .......Wait untill Drive "C" shows up .....click More Option .....

Click cleanup all but last restore ...: .......Click OK.....and ........Ok again to clean disk. .....

These steps will gain back alot space for you.

Good luck.

Hey Tech, I suspect there are some background apps running and that should take care of it. Hopefully.

OK, I'm using Revo Uninstaller and have a few questions:

(but first, about the registry cleaners - I read through a thread on this site that said the reg cleaners are unnecessary as XP supposedly does a decent job of cleaning up after itself. ... then again, read on)

I went to uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support, but when it got to the registry cleaning task, I'm faced with2363 leftover registry items. They say to check each one to verify I want to get rid of them. Um...I ain't got that kind of time on my hands. Any advice? Is this typical? Do you just take their word? I looked at 5 or so, and they all are in the ...Apple... directories, but I can't check the 2358 more (!).

I also found the following:

I noticed that I have the Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX and the Plug-in. Is that a problem?
PCHealth - I think I loaded this a month or so ago to try to diagnose this problem. I'll uninstall it.

MS SQL Server 2000 - purposefully installed, but could it be causing problems?
Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem, with a red X through the icon on the Revo screen. Does that mean they don't like it? I also did a search on it and found this: "The Motorola SM56 is a SoftModem chipset - lacking a DSP (digital signal processor) - that places a high load on your PC's CPU. This type of modem is also known as HSP (host signal processor)." I'm wondering why this would show as high CPU on other apps, but ...??

Thanks again!

Hi Ski.
"(but first, about the registry cleaners - I read through a thread on this site that said the reg cleaners are unnecessary as XP supposedly does a decent job of cleaning up after itself. ... then again, read on)"

* Some don't like to clean registry if pc is in Ok condition.....Yours is SLOW crawl ..... I do clean it almost every week with CCleaner ... or whenever it gets slow.

* Whatever left over are most likely junks or broken/invalid registries .....I clean them all out .(Did the same on my son laptop also XP/Celeron Cpu)
" I'm wondering why this would show as high CPU on other apps," Can't answer you that ....But If it causes problem...take it out ....lighten your pc up...

This is a typical Cpu..;

Hi Ski, With REVOuninstaller, you should ONLY click on the entries that have been bolded. There will be a host of others, but they should be left alone. It would also be a good idea to set up a restore point as well before doing this. CCleaner is also helpful as Tech4me has mentioned. If you have dial up and are using that modem, I would recommend changing it. They are relatively cheap these days and you can get a good one from Radio Shack or Best Buy for $20 or maybe less. coastie

OK, I'm on DSL, not dialup, though the modem is there b/c the previous user was on dialup. I'll remove the modem. (is there any significance in the red "X" across the icon in Revo?)

I'll go ahead and get CCleaner and do the restore point.

As for Revo Uninstaller, almost all of the 2300-something entries are bold. I know only to remove the bolded ones, but do you trust them to only bold the ones that should be removed? They say to confirm that I want each one removed. THAT just ain't gonna happen! If I have the restore point, I'll feel more secure in removing all of them.

I've had some rather extensive stuff that was bolded when you started opening the subfolders. I'll usually create a restore point and then go ahead and get rid of the stuff. So far, I've not had to do a system restore. I also usually don't use the maximum setting but the next tier up, which is usually sufficient. coastie

As Coastie said..Its always good to create a restore point first .....( Too many is NO good either....each restore point "As your busy pc" might take up 2-4GB)

If you did all steps that I listed ....you already had restore point (Right before Auslogics registrey defrag...starts)

"almost all of the 2300-something entries are bold." properly ....you know why its slow by now.....LOL.

You might want to replace Adobe Acrobat with Foxit Reader. http://www.foxitsoft...df/rd_intro.php It is soo much more lightweight than adobe reader.

As for defragging i recommend http://www.defraggler.com/ Defraggler. Its from the makes as ccleaner and they do a very good job for defragging for something free.

Hey Tech, I forgot that the Auslogics Registry Defrag created a restore point. Thanks for pointing that out. coastie

How full is the hard drive? Have you done the defrag yet?

The one possibility (not sure it is likely or not...tough to say from what I have read) is that your computer is trying use virtual memory due to the low amount of RAM you have and is having to "work" hard at it.

I would also suggest cleaning out the caches of the web browsers.

Hey smax, Yeah, I brought that memory thing up in Post #13, but seems to have gotten shuffled out of the mix. Thanks for bringing it back up to the front. coastie

This is a pretty typical task manager process tab:

You can see my RAM commit is well below the 600+MB I have. (yes, it could be more, but I really don't think that's the problem. May just as well go buy some more, anyway.)

What about the performance tab?

Unfortunately, it is not clear from your information (and might be too difficult to be clear...it is tough to REALLY know sometimes) if the slow down is really processor related, hard drive related (i.e. either OS virtual memory calls or browser cache calls), or really Internet slow downs.

My suspicion at this point is drive related (and it is only a suspicion at this point). It could be that the OS is making calls to the drive for virtual memory (even if you are not maxing out real memory, Windoze sets aside virtual memory and the closer you get to full memory, the more Windoze will "play" with that virtual memory) or that the browsers' caches are full and your drive is a bit of a mess and thus browser cache calls are causing the drive to spin away.

When the slow downs occur, can you hear the hard drive "flailing" away? The performance tab might tells more about your memory situation.

Have you cleared the caches and run a disk defrag? You did not indicate yet how full the drive is.

This is NOT a typical Cpu usage ...."It over the edge" Its choked up ..... Its only ONE user....?

For now you can UNINSTALL these : * FF and all add ons ( Your ff alone is 133MB) and Spybot S& ....."teatimer.exe" .(Use SupperAntiSpyware)

When you open IE 7 .....Go to tool ......internet option .....Under browsing history .......delete ....and delete All .....Check box "Also delete files setting by add/on.....Ok..

You can follow this SVC guide to disable or set in Manual all services that you don't need ....: www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Hey, it's really nice of you to stick with me as I (we) try to figure this out. I've uninstalled Safari and all other things Apple, Firefox, and some other programs, but still the 100% cpu drag. Will try the blackviper solution, too. I really could not imagine a disk defrag would help, but the analyzer said it's needed, so I'll do that, too. One interesting note is that FFox stopped working (couldn't bring it up) after I had run CCleaner. Fortunately, that's an easy fix.

Also, the disk is only about a third used (37GB HD), so it's not that it's full or anything. I'll still try the defrag...just because.

Since FireFox stopped working, you might just uninstall it and reinstall it. It is possible that the FireFox files/stuff got "corrupted" and was maybe causing the problem. A clean re-install maybe might be the solution to your problem.

Hey smax, I did uninstall FF, and ran the defrag. So, my only browser is IE, and it's still maxing out with just switching between a few tabs in the browser.

Could I just have a badly matched mother board/CPU/RAM type setup? Really, this was a fresh install only 2 months after a Derek's boot n nuke.

Makes no sense to me...

BTW, also, when I had run the Revo Uninstaller on an Apple app, and it showed 2363 registry entries...I didn't delete the registry entries, and it's showing the app is gone, so I can't get to those registry points. It didn't seem like CCleaner saw them. Any suggestions? It was Apples synch app with the iPhone (which I don't use).

Thx!

Hi ski, When running REVOuninstaller, you should have removed everything that was bolded after saving the registry files. As far as CCleaner goes, run the registry fix ( second on the menu list ) and see what comes up and click fix all. coastie

Maybe. It could be some hardware related thing, but if I recall correctly, it only happens with browser software (IE, FF, etc), correct? If so, then something seems to be wrong with something that the browsers use.
