Hi all. I am new to the community. Have a ? re Webroot's newest version of Spy Sweeper. After downloading the new version I find that the "Interner Communication Shield won't "shut up". I'm getting constant pop ups telling me what the shield has blocked at that particular moment. It's more than annoying as all other activity comes to a stop during each pop up. Webroot support is of absolutely no help. Gave me an uninstall/cleanup utility & told me to reinstall. Same result. Anyone else having this experience?

Hi and welcome to the forum. Open Spysweeper and click on Shields. At the bottom right click on the Shield options link. Uncheck " Open Spysweeper to show alert details". I don't know if that is it or not but may be. I am running it and have not had that problem. coastie65

Thanks for the response coastie65. Unchecking your suggestion automatically puts the popups in the system tray. Actually either selection produces the constant popups. Are you using version 6.0? I've had Spy Sweeper for 4 years. This is the first time I' ve had this occur. Webroot is trying to tell me the messages indicate I'm infected. I think not, as I run Comodo firewall, Avira antivirus, Spyware Blaster, RUbotted and do regular online scans to double check my installed security.

If it's a real major hassle for you getting all these pop-ups it would be best if you just uninstall it, or use a different anti-spyware program at best if you want to continue using one none the less. I haven't used the newest spysweeper but i've used the 5.0 i believe and it's been infected 3 times on my old computer when i had spy sweeper so its up to you lol.

P.s Running all those programs must take up alot of ram, if you dont have more than 1 gig go easy on the programs.

Hi, OK. To be on the safe side, Download and run the following: www.SUPERantispyware.com & then www.malwarebytes.org . They are both very good and FREE. I have them both installed as back up scans to my regular active stuff. coastie

Thanks again coastie65. I have both programs you mentioned as backups. I haven't run them recently. Guess I bettet just for additional peace of mind. Just out of curiosity, do you ever utilize any of the online scanners? If so, any one better than another?

Hey, From my experience with those things, they see to always fing something, then want you you to but the program to remove them. For that reason, I tend to take them with a grain of salt. I would run superantispyware first. Make sure it is updated first.

You are right. Kaspersky's scanner is the only one I've found that is not overly pushy. Thanks again for your input.

Hi OldTimer and welcome to PCWorld Community.

I had something similar happen to me with the latest version of SpySweeper... I do get the pop-ups every time I'm trying to install/download something, but I just click on "accept" (whatever the word is) and I'm kind of used to it by now.

The problem I had when I installed this latest version is that I did NOT want to have the Online Backup thing they're now offering. I went back and forth with Cust Supp a few times, and I told them I would not be signing up for the Online Backup. That pop-up can be annoying too.

If you're going to uninstall SpySweeper, then the options that Coastie has suggested are good ones. I use them as well, and I run the scans every Friday night, before I get ready to retire. If you downloaded those two, make sure that you update them before you run the scans, please, that way you'll make sure you have the latest protection for your computer.

Hi OldtimerII, I just checked my Webroot Spysweeper and it shows the latest version which is 5.5.3. You are using the Webroot AV & Antispyware package which is the latest. I am using Avast! for Anti Virus and Spysweeper for Antispyware. I have Superantispyware installed for back up scan options. The version of Webroot that I am running is pretty quiet in the background, although it will stop things dead in their tracks when updating. Bit of a nuisance, I guess, but not all that bad. coastie

Unless I'm reading it wrong,(entirely possible, old eyes ;)) the website is showing 6.0 as a stand alone version of Spy Sweeper. I agree, older versions were very unobtrusive. I was very satisfied. It's when I renewed that I started having all this trouble. Webroot wants me to give them access to my computer . I'm verrryyy reluctant to do so. I think I'd rather cancel & go with commercial version of Superantispyware. What's your opinion?

Hi, Yeah, 6.0 is a combo with AntiVirus & Antispyware. I am just running the antispyware as it was a freebie with MSN. When Webroot takes control of the computer, you can see what files they are accessing. For the most part I have found it to be nonintrusive, but if i am doing something and it updates, I will find myself back at the desktop. No big deal as i can click the tab at the bottom and return to what I was doing. Just a nuisance at times. I think the purpose of taking control of the computer is primarily to check the settings, but that would be your choice. I have allowed it once, with eMachines support, to prove a point. Kinda weird to watch the cursor moving around and clicking and such, with no input from you though. :D

Well, if 6.0 is a spyware, antivirus combo, that could explain the weird behavior. As I understand it, you should't run more than one antivirus. I use Avira Premium antivirus..

Hi, Yep. That could well be your problem as you should only have ONE antivirus and ONE antispyware program running actively. Disable the Avira and see how that goes. coastie

I was just on the webroot site. They have labeled the stand alone spy sweeper & antivirus with spysweeper as 6.0. As far as I can determine I have the standalone spy sweeper as the other costs $10 more. I think I'm going to insist on a refund & go with superantispyware. Seems to be a favorite on many of the tech sites.

Hi, under OPTIONS and you click on the SHIELDS tab, the top listing is for the Anti Virus, if is not shaded and checked, then your have both the AntiVirus & antispyware in which case you should disable the the other antivirus program. coastie
