Wow, I've never heard of a company asking for the severance pay back.

Maybe now that MSFT has set this example, our new goverment can ask the car companies and the banks for our money back too, since they really didn't need it, and they squandered the billions they received.

I wonder if microsoft wrote the software that calculated the severence amount?? Update with service pack and recheck your calcuations. :^0

The company I work for took some of my pay back from 2008. They took it out of the last paycheck for that year. I was unaware of the mistake, but I received no letter or warning, just a smaller pay check. I called HR and found out THEY had made a mistake 6 months earlier. Severence pay is the same thing. It is calculated from the amount you get paid, and or, the length of time you have been with the company. So really, when you receive your package, you should have a pretty good idea how much you are supposed to get.

I was also once paid an extra $1000 on a paycheck, I didn't cash it, I sent it back and got a new check cut. Mistakes happen. Not that I'm the biggest fan of ms or anything.

Anyone that returns a severance is a complete idiot.

The amount someone gets when he is fired is a matter of opinion and usually a company never gives more than it has to by law.

Usually it's a lot less than a judge would award in court.

Here in Canada most companys give the minimum required by law (1 week per year). If you go to court the normal settlement is 1 month per year.

If you get a lawyer it will more than likely get settled out of court, because the company knows it will loose.

Since it is opion on what you should get. If they give you more, let them go to court. You usually never get a deal like that.

If it's a isn't a rediculously large amount you'd get to keep it anyway.
