Windows takes 20 minutes to load, and then some

Recently "Repaired" Windows with Installation DVD that was a veritable nightmare; now in process of updating.



Windows takes nearly exactly 20 minutes to start up as all HD seeking ceases for no apparent reason for that amount of time which began before I attempted to "Repair" my Windows installation. It will load without prob in diagnostic start up with everything but "services" loading. Went through "services" one by one to isolate without success. After Windows loads everything works ok, but I am unable to install the .Net Framework SP3 (manually either) and Windows SP3 fails to install (waiting until end to reach error and then everything rolls back with errors). Feeling as though my days are numbered I am backing up HD and have resolved to go through the pain of a fresh reinstall with my installation DVD; however, I wanted to uninstall a few things prior to the back up but I get this error when I attempt to open CleanseUninstaller program (frequently used) "procedure entry point GetRequestedRuntimeInfo could not be located in the dynamic link library mscoree.dll", followed by an initialization error that mscorwks.dll could not be loaded. Googled around and found a "fix" through reinstallation of the .Net 2.0 Framework. This download and installation failed with this refenced site, check it out (sorry, indeed!). Closing the useless notification, Windows sends an Error Report which, lo' and behold, has absolutely no link for a solution!

I don't know if this holds the key to my bigger issue, but I certainly would like to try to work through it first if I can. Is there a known issue with the installation of the .Net 2.0 Framework and a solution? I use 3B Software's Registry Repair Pro and it does not "see" a problem in the .dll files, but running sfc /scannow asks for a host of missing files from the WIN XP Pro SP2 CD, which I have the "regular" XP SP2 CD, but even this thing goes through the entire installation only to fail at the end. Should I just lock and load and lay to rest this suffering software on a fresh install of my MediaCenter?

Before we dig in, did your computer behave differently as you were repairing Windows or was it having issues during the repair?

Problem preceded "Repair". It was, in fact, the impetus for even considering turning to the installation DVD for a solution in the first place.

First, you really shouldn't need a third party uninstaller except in rare circumstances, as the Windows Add/Remove does a good job. You mention re-installing from the DVD. The problem is that XP Media Center Edition does not come on a DVD. You can burn a recovery DVD from the recovery partition, but that is different than a full install set. The actual install kit for XP MCE comes on 3 CD's, and can be a bear to install.

Windows taking 20 minutes is an indicator of major conflict in the startup. You did not mention what anti-malware software you are running.

You also did not say what process you used to "repair" Windows.

Maybe you failed to see that this is a Dell Laptop, which means that I don't have an OEM Version of MC. It is all conveniently piled onto a Dell Installation DVD from which I can Reinstall or Repair my OS. But thanks for noticing the thread.

Also, I appreciate the advice on the uninstaller. Cleanse Uninstaller uses the original software's uninstaller, if it has one, or Window's. What else it does is clean the crap out of my registry that many programs sloppily leave behind and it also locates all related folders in case I want to rip every practical trace of the program from my precious HD. I like it that way, so I'll continue to use it.

Actually any pre-installed OS is by definition an OEM version. Many times large manufacturers (Dell, HP, etc) customize the OS to a certain extent, with their splash screens, special desktop backgounds and other minor tweaks. Then they image that drive and use the image for installation on hundreds of thousands of hard drives for installation on their machines.

The OEM version that is available from computer parts stores is the generic OEM version without the manufacturers add-ins. You have a DVD from Dell, but does it say "install" or "recovery"?. It may seem the same, but they are different. The install disc does a clean install, a recovery DVD will recover the disc to it's as shipped condition from the factory, including all the bloatware.

The quirkiness of XP MCE in the install process was a major reason most manufacturers moved to recovery partitions and discs rather than install discs only. The process started in 2005 which was when the first upgrade of XP MCE occured.

But, I still am in the dark as to what anti-malware you are running, and have you used a registry cleaner?

BTW - it looks as if you posted a hijackthis listing, but I don't read them and not many members of the community do.

I know my way around enough to have addressed whether the plug is in the wall, etc. I'm sure you are a wealth of knowledge but you are not addressing my question. I have no malware on my system. I use Norton AV which detects malware. I also use Ad Aware from Lavasoft which also detects malware. I am way past "GO", catch up with me and don't invest anymore of your time pondering the basics. This community is the "Troubleshooting" Community, not the useless advice community. Bottom line, I really don't want to go round and round with you until you display an effort to understand where I am in my TROUBLESHOOTING process.

I did. The reason I asked about what anti-malware you had on the machine was the fact that Norton's Internet Security and McAfee's Secuity Suite are noted for their resource hogging and slowing machines down to a crawl.

It is best if one did not jump to conclusions about why a particular question is asked, and I don't believe I asked if the machine was plugged in.

It is fairly easy to diagnose a computer if you are sitting in front of it. It is more difficult to diagnose a computer over the phone with someone, and it is even more difficult to diagnose a compter with only forum responses. It is even less helpful when after asking a question that many times is something the member has tried, instead of a reasonable response you get snapped at.

If the disc you have from Dell is a recovery DVD, there will be no format option as is normal on the true install disc. This is why I asked the method by which you repaired the XP MCE installation. If you have a spare HD, an option would be to install it into the machine, format it from within your current OS and then disconnect the current HD and reinstall from the Dell disc to the clean HD.

Thanks for setting me straight. I will run both of what you recommend. The frustration is mounting here 'tis all. I don't use ZoneBlocker and I am inbetween FW's because i became suspicious of whether a ZA update was at the root of all of this. I will return when I have re-scanned my system.



The Installation DVD is the Re-Install, not the Recovery

Installed and ran both Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware. The MAM ran after (and caught a few things more than) the SAS--MAM running in Smart Scan vs SAS Full System. Always nice to have more scanning software that comes with Tech interest and recommendation. Nevertheless, problem remains.

I went through MS support and found some verbal maps on removing the .Net Frameworks so that I could reinstall them with known OEM downloads. I was able to successfully reinstall v 1.1 and update it, which AutoUpdates could not and manually trying was as fruitless. Anyway, I've seen a couple of demands for the v 2.0 from ZoneAlarm and my attempt to reinstall Cleanse Uninstaller which pointed me in this direction and mscoree.dll is a .Net Framework file.

Incidentally, I ran LS AdAware Plus in Full System Scan and it choked out what it claimed to be a virus (W95/Bumblebee.1738), so I quarantined the bugger but I haven't really researched yet this virus. It's isolation did nothing to improve my situation and there were no further solutions or recommendations and what I did skim in the Google thereof wasn't anything dire...oh well. I'll call it a day. Thanks for the interest. I will run MAM in Full System Scan as I head for some better displacement. GN

Might also try running them in Safe Mode. If it is something "nasty", sometimes anti-malware (whether anti-virus or anti-spyware, etc) cannot really deal with programs currently running in memory effectively. Safe Mode will ONLY load bare minimum Micro$oft Windoze stuff. So, unless something disguises itself as one of those "bare" system programs, they won't run in Safe Mode.

Ran all crap-detecting software I have in Safe Mode, no crap detected.

Again, the Dell Installation DVD is an "Install" DVD, not a "Recovery" disk. I inserted and booted from it and chose "Repair Windows" in hopes of fixing my boot up issue, which it did not.

Windows still takes 20 minutes to load. It gets all the way to the Desktop and Taskbar and loads my SYnaptic Pointing Device before the HD suddenly goes quiet. At this point, if I mouse over the Taskbar my pointer becomes animated but I cannot bring up the Start Menu or the Taskbar Menu by right-clicking on Taskbar. The only thing I can do during this mysteriously quiet period is ctrl-alt-del the Task Manager into existence. If I try to run a program through the "run" command it will not load, or it "hangs" (I put that in paranthesis because any program I try to start at this point will, in fact, eventually load, but only once WIndows wakes back up and continues loading 20 minutes from the time that the HD first stops seeking). The one thing I can do via the Task Manager is to Restart Windows at any moment during this long pause. And again, Windows loads without problem with all Services turned off, but I am unable (still) to isolate any service as the one clear cause of the problem. If it would be useful, I can provide a list of all the running processes during the long pause, but I will have to reboot and write them down first.

Have you run a chkdsk scan? I am not sure if that will help or not, but it might be possible that there are some slight bad sectors that the OS is temporarily "choking" on. Kind of a shot in the dark.

Thanks for the attention. It's really beginning to seem as though somewhere along the way something unusual was damaged (maybe that virus wasn't so much of nothing) and here I sit with this retarded .net framework setup...which reminds me that I visited the Microsoft knowledge base again to further investigate a reinstallation of the .net framework version 2.0. I ran into a snag when I tried to repair the .net 2.0 installer so I decided to go the manual route and then ran into same snag when trying to uninstall the .net 2.0, the snag being that it wouldn't do either and gives me a message complaining that it would affect other applications that were installed (excuse me??)!! So I restarted (I love it when I have to restart and then wait the 20 min for bootup) in diagnostic mode with nothing but the windows installer turned on and I got the same message! So I tried in full diagnostic mode and it tells me that the windows installer needs to be loaded! Ugh! And try as I might I still am unable to find any useful troubleshooting on that snag in the knowledge database.


I will run the chkdsk and return later.



I should also say that I can get no further than Windows Service Pack 2. I looked up troubleshooting for installing Service Pack 3 and got nowhere.

Microsoft Info was that these are for "Developers" and I have never put any of them on

my computer . Which SPECIFIC "Windows Installer" version is on your computer ?

I also saw Uninblue in your HJT log , which , is a registry cleaner/optimizer. You can use what you want , it's your


PC but, NO expert would ever recommend running a registry cleaner.

This entry in the HJT says that Uniblue is on Autostart ;

O4 - HKCU..Run: Uniblue ProcessQuickLink 2] "C:Program FilesUniblueProcessQuickLink2ProcessQuickLink2.exe" /autostart.

This could also be one of the culprits.



Also noticed that Java is way out of date [current is up-date 12

As you might know , these framework take a long time to install . They seem to Stall at times but,

be patient.

Lots of programs that I have installed for testing purposes DO require the .Net to function at all.
