It's the all around best for now, because of its extensions. But I'm increasingly interested in the cloud infrastructures being offered by MS and Google, and they (not bloat) will hurt FF, which has nothing comparable. Maybe Yahoo should buy it and give the others a real run for their money.

hmmm.. please, cut the crap..
chrome might be fast, but it misses something huge.. load of extensions that firefox has..
yeah, firefox isn't the fastest.. but to be true, i don't think it's never been.. opera was faster ;)
i don't wanna take any credit from chrome, it will be good browser too, but at least for me (and i know many others) firefox still beats them all..
fx3.1b3 is a lot faster than 3.0.x...

This article did make for a really entertaining read. Firefox dead- because of Chrome?!?? Give me a break! Chrome may be slightly faster than Firefox right now, but it just can't compete with Firefox's versatility. I would fully expect a stripped down minimalistic browser to be faster than a fully-featured browser. To me, Chrome isn't noticeably faster than Firefox, but Safari is noticeably faster than both of them. However, I stick with Firefox (and Opera) because they're a lot more productive than either Chrome or Safari.

I'm a huge Ubuntu fan and regularly use it for many tasks that used to fall to Solaris in our server farm.
But, I say, screw the kids. College only teaches you to work for someone else -- the money is better spent pimping your ride.

I must respectfully disagree with your assessment that the Firefox browser is doomed to the bloat of corporate obsolescence.
I have had a chance to compare Chrome and Firefox (and other popular browsers, including the new Explorer 8) on the Windows side, and for my uses, at least, Firefox is the clear winner. It offers the most complete browsing experience with adequate speed and minimal overhead. Yes, faster and lighter browsers are available, but no one currently offers a better all-around product. Also, Mozilla does not operate in a vacuum; competitive pressures will drive continuous product improvements.
As a side note, if speed is your thing, Firefox’s configuration file can be tweaked to noticeably increase its performance. Just Google “speed up Firefox” for numerous how-to tutorials.

^^^^Exactly my thoughts. to further add once Chrome is fully completed and it does have a long way to go then lets make the comparison of speed. Plus as far as I'm concerned Google can take all there stuff and stick it. All we are doing it just creating another giant (they already are) that will hold control. that is what is nice about being able to have other choices, and personally I don't trust them with my privacy what so ever.

I use Safari on the Mac and FireFox when on the PC. I tried Chrome a few months ago (on Windows), and it was fine... nothing spectacular.
My main problem with Chrome is that I don't trust google. I tend to avoid anything from google. Hopefully, others will avoid them in the future as well.

I don't know if Firefox is dead but I'm committed to Chrome because it's extremely fast and well thought out. In addition to the speed, I like the tabs running as independent processes, the placement of tabs at the top of the browser window, and the merging of the address and search bar into one. Extensions will come but I do most of my browsing in Chrome today.

The article is both right and wrong.
Firefox has grown in popularity because it was (for a time) the fastest, best overall browser on the market. Consequently digital geeks went crazy for it, and from there it spread into the mainstream.
But now that Chrome is outperforming it, will the digital geeks continue to rally to Firefox's cause? I don't know. Without the support of this elite group, Firefox will fail.
However, I don't think we're at that point just yet. Chrome has 5% market share, or less. It still doesn't work properly on many sites, which I why I still use both Firefox and Chrome.
If Firefox can somehow tweak its core code so that it's as fast as Chrome, it will continue to thrive.

Nah, sure it's fast, but it's like comparing apples with oranges. Without 3rd party support like Firefox has, there's no contention. Also, Firefox 3.5 in beta is much faster than 3.0. If all you care about is speed, then use Chrome, but if you want to increase the browser's usability and functionality, there's nothing like Firefox.

Keir,
You say Firefox is a juggernaut, heading in the wrong direction, thet they should apologize and turn around and go the write direction.
What is the compass by which you determine these directions?
Could you please expound on the critique, or refer to another article providing such. If it's just the speed factor, you could've said it all in one paragraph.
Something I'd like Firefox to provide is a feature to rollback an update that breaks my favorite extensions. On my system, I find FF starts faster some days than others.
Can't wait for the WebDevs to grow this window...
Best Regards,
BillMc

firefoxs runs better than Chrome and is NOT a memory hog like Chrome.

Maybe that's why Firefox is default on most linux boxes because it works and takes less memory. Plus all the add-ons are optional.

I will say it now.
You are right. I downloaded the beta release for windows a while ago and never looked back. You said it best "Infinitely better".

I disagree. Google makes their money from adds. Mozilla does not. Hence, there will never be an adblocker for Chrome. Unless Google allows devs to build extensions for Chrome. But until that time I will stick with my "Slow" but ad free firefox 3.0.

Ryan... but just imagine the targeted advertising that you'll be missing out on by not using chrome.

Not everyone has an underpowered machine. On my core duo laptop there is only a slight speed difference. Besides chrome is featureless compared to Firefox, extensiosn make Firefox by far better and it will have a long life because of features.

I would never knowingly put something made by Google on any of my computers. They spy on you with every chance they get.

Firefox is also much faster with the Adblock Plus add-on.

I tried Chrome but was immediately left longing for my Firefox customizations. I might use it on my Acer Aspire1 but unless it has the same great plug in and add ons, I won't be switching.
I gave up Opera in favor of Firefox and was a Netscape user back when it was good. I'm a Google fanatic but I wasn't all that swept away by Chrome at first glance.
