I just tried FF 3.1 beta 3. all I cn say is wow! To assert that Firefox is dead is ridiculous based on my trial. The beta flies and is feature rich. The fallacy in this article is that Frefox developers would fold and die and not innovate. The author could not be more wrong.

Mingle through some of the Chrome forums like chromefans.org or chromeable.com and you will see most of the discussions are about when extensions will be coming. Everyone who replies to those comments says the whole point to chrome is light weight and speed.
There will probably come a time when 3rd party extensions will be allowed because its google and its open source. But for the most part there won't be many extensions despite some minor light weight ones like weather or something.
The firefox users (like I used to be) are very loyal no matter what chrome comes has to offer, most of you won't switch just because it has been proven people resist change. Just minor things like bookmarks need to open in a new tab by default or I will never change no matter how slow FF is (right click 'open in new tab' is one extra click). Or like my friend who has to have his bookmarks in a constantly open side window on the left side of his browser. Little OCD things like that will keep FF on top but the generation that will grow up with a choice between chrome, FF, and IE who don't have those OCD tendencies will love chrome.
I ask you to try chrome and only chrome for one week and then make a decision. Don't DL it and take one look and say "whoa I don't like that button" and dismiss it. Aside from some compatabillity issues like websites not recognizing chrome, it is "infinitely better"

That's fine, pmr. Say as much as you need to. But, I have to tell you that your assumption is wrong -- at least in my case. I gave Chrome a full test for more than 1 week, and -- just as another post mentioned earlier -- the real problem with Chrome is its lack of functionality. In some cases, the lack of truly useful extensions is the problem. In other instances, it's the fact that the browser does not yet work in 2 important ways for me: 1) I can't log in to my university's online course system using Chrome, and 2) I cannot connect remotely to my work PC using Chrome. In both cases, I have to use either Firefox (my browser of choice) or IE.

The last thing I have to say is that I - and probably everyone else here - do not appreciate being told that we're not smart enough to evaluate a piece of software properly before making a decision. Stick to the facts you know, will ya? :)

Cheers.

i'm using linux most of the time so at the moment there is no way i could use chrome fore one whole week..

and even if i would have that option - how do you think i can do that? :) i have 20+ extensions running on my fx3.1b3 (and it's taking 10-30% of my ram, not too much for me..) i can't live w/o those extensions..

for example: delicious - most of my bookmarks are there, do you really think i wanna use web to access my bookmarks? i don't think so..

also tab mix plus, WOT, noscript (yeah, i'm kinda security freak too :P) - if chrome won't use them i won't use chrome either..

go to addons.mozilla.org and check how many ppl are downloading extensions - ppl love extensions and there is no way that firefox is dead or is going to die in near future.. get real =)

and btw: with all those extensions i feel 3.1(/5) is still not that slow at all.. speed is important for me too and i'm google addicted (no question about that!) but more than anything in this web 2.0 world i love firefox and its community.. noone else is there for open web and open web applications..

Based on your feedback, I'm going to try FF beta right away! Thank you.

I certainly didn't mean to say and never really did say that you weren't smart just most people are stubborn when it comes to change, especially on the techy side of things. I too have to use FF for some things such as my University e-mail account and some other sites that just don't recognize chrome yet.
But i was never big on extensions anyway so it's mostly a preference thing too, I had a weather and an ad blocker extension on my FF and that was it. My switch to chrome was probably a lot easier than most.

I am not resistant to change (I'm the one who made the "... until a
Bookmark opens in a new window by default" remark). I'm just not the
type that makes changes just for the sake of change.
Is Chrome a decent browser? Sure. That's not the question though. The
question is: Does it meet all my needs and desires? Or, at the very
least, does it do a better job of meeting them? The answer here is a
definite no. One of the most basic desires I have is not having to open
a new open window manually each time I wish to do something as simple
as click on a bookmark.
The browser that would do an even better job of meeting my desires
would actually take this one step further. Any browser that allowed me
to customize it in such a way that the mere act of clicking on a link
causes a new window to open (which is exactly the way I have the
desktop set up, BTW) would immediately become my new default browser.

Just to let you know, you can open a new bookmark (or a link for that matter) in a new tab my middle-mouse clicking it. You know, the scroll wheel....it works both on firefox and chrome... and IE.

I didn't know that, thank you. I hate clicking on the scroll wheel though. This is an excellent opportunity for browser customization - being able to define the default mouse action. Allow me to define the left button to do what the middle mouse button is currently doing.

I think that everyone here who like firefox, should also try tab mix plus extension, it really is a must have thing to have =) Multirows tabs etc, it's just brilliant!

That's quite an endorsement sander85. Thank you, I will try it on your recommendation! Word of mouth advice, is better than any advertisement. Oh I like your avatar. Oops, it's getting close to 4:00 AM for me, argh! I must wake up at 7:00 AM. Good nite everyone! Sweet dreams! :)

PS: I also like that "brilliant" term. It is simply um brilliant!

Just tell the readers how much money Google OR the firefox-hater Andrew gave you to write this article...

And the thing that irritates me the most is

1. I have often 25 tabs open in my firefox 3.0.7 and there is just one process firefox.exe with 92 MB memory usage totaling 46 process vista sp1. But in Chrome there arearound 27 process of chrome (chrome.exe, chrome.exe......) with around 140 MB totaling 70proceses. Its awkwar.!!!

2. Chrome exits when i click the close button in the tab bar when there is only 1 tab open.

I don't know if I've already said this in this thread, but anyway, I would never put anything made by Google on any computer of mine because of privacy concerns.

Hey, that's good information. I didn't know that, either. I'll be sure to use.

That's the whole point of Chrome. When one thread process (or tab) dies, it does not affect any others. Whereas, one single offending java-script error any tab in FF, will take down the entire browser, and all your open tabs along with it. Otherwise known as a browser crash.

re: the stupid URL bar that explodes into a list of sites whenever I type even a single letter there
That "exploding" URL bar is an installation choice!
The interface is identical to older versions of Firefox...again, choices you make during installation

First I want to say that I think you're pretty much right. I'm a long time Firefox user, and just downloaded Chrome to "test" it out, but I find myself returning to Chrome more and more often, even though my addons, which, by the way, I've found I don't use that much, are not in Chrome, but on Firefox. Sure I still have Firefox on my computer, especially because of all the tools it can provide me for when I design web pages, but I like Chrome, mostly because it's very, very fast, and I guess I may not be like all of you and have a super computer, but when I use Firefox with all of the 10 addons I've downloaded for it, it's not exactly blazing fast. It's not the looks that draw me to Chrome, no, I solved that problem in Firefox awhile ago, right now, if I took a screenshot of my Chrome browser, and tool a screenshot of my Firefox browser, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, thanks to those legendary Firefox addons. I used to think that the addons that are available for Firefox would be what kept me there, and there are a lot of addons (over 6,000 for those of you that are wondering), but I've found that all of those addons are nice, but I really don't need them all the time. I need speed, I don't want to wait, at all, for any page to load, and with chrome I don't have to wait as long. Sure, sometimes Firefox handles stuff faster, but not always.

I definitely have to agree with the statement about how Chrome takes up a LOT more memory than Firefox, and because of that, and because I really do like Firefox better, I will be staying with Firefox, for a long, long time.

There is a shiny new Browser on the block.
However , I am very happy with Firefox and have no desire to
install and test another.
It is rather like having a wife. Some people swap in the hope of something better.
