hey all. i was wondering if anyone knew of any software that could emulate the rename functionality of vista on xp. it gets pretty irritating to go to each individual file to change, say, an artist name. in vista you have the option to select multiple files and even change multiple values at once. at the bottom of this picture is what im talking about. !http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp327/morbiddoctor/Untitled.jpg|thumbnail=true!

Not having used Vista much myself, I'm not absolutely sure if I have your question right. In XP you can change artist, title and others in the Summery tab of the properties of each file. You can edit more than one file at once by selecting all that you wish to edit and getting the properties then. All changes in the Summery tab from then on will apply to all files that you selected.

Hi Flashorn. Morbolik has Windows XP, not Windows Vista. Unfortunately, the suggestion will not work for him in this case.

Hi Morbolik and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

Please take a look at this screen shot: (Click on the image to enlarge it.)

This screen shot is of Winamp. Within the Media Library section, one can Right Click within the listing of tracks and select Edit Selected Items. This feature will allow you make changes on multiple tracks at one time, if the ID3 track information is the same. If the track information is not the same (such as album name or artist name), you can Right Click on the listing of tracks and select View File Info. This will allow you to make individual changes to track listings.

Now, I must ask, you referenced that you wanted to emulate the functionality of Vista within XP. However, the screen shot seems to be of Windows Vista. Do you have software that makes your Windows XP computer look like Windows Vista?

Good info, mph. I've never seen where to edit ID3 tags in Winamp (since I rarely use it); but do you know that he can use Windows Media Player (10, 11, or possibly others) to edit the tags? Also, if editing the properties of the files didn't work, it's not likely that the changes will stick when he uses another program.

Hi Numbers. Yes, ID3 tags are not application specific. Any application that recognizes .mp3 tracks should be able to recognize and edit ID3 tags. I use several applications to play my audio files:

- Winamp
- Windows Media Player
- the default audio player of my video card
- Zune application

All of these applications, with the exception of the default player, allows me to change the ID3 tag information.

I believe I understand what you are stating but let me see if I really do understand. Editing the properties of a file only edits the Windows properties. For example, any changes I make to the ID3 tag of a file has no bearing on the filename of the file...and vice versa. If he or she is looking only to change the ID3 tag of a file (album name, artist, etc.), any application that states it recognizes and allows editing of the ID3 tag would work. Any change made to the ID3 tag will be seen within any application used.

Hey MPH !!

As noted by number , I was in Windows Media Player 11 in XP when I

edited the name on the MP3 file. You can edit any of the tags in WMP

and also right in the Music folder itself.

There are multiple programs that are now available to simulate Vista on XP but,

why do it if you don't have Vista. LOL !

If you just want to have the bigger task bar in either XP or Vista (superbar for W7),

just "Right Click" the task bar and choose Unlock the Taskbar.

Now , where the Icons are near the Start icon , choose a empty spot and Right Click

again . In the ensuing context menu , at the top of that menu , mouse to "View".

The one to choose would be "Large Icons" and the taskbar will resize automatically.

Now , Lock the Taskbar and you're done. I prefer the larger taskbar but, this is up

to the individual member.

There is also another Player which will do all of these edits and I forgot to mention it

MediaMonkey . I don't know why because I always

recommend this one to whomever asks about tags and other features. This one has

all of the features you are looking for.

You could also try MP3-Info Extension (http://www.mutschler.de/mp3ext/)...it adds the ability to edit MP3 tags within Windoze Explorer and works with Windoze XP. It adds a "MP3Info" tab to the Properties window (i.e. when you right click a file and select Properties) of a MP3 file.

Hey smax !!

Thanks for the link ! I was only in XP for the purpose of giving my opinion

to Morbo. I use Vista now and only boot XP when I really have to. I do have a

player which I use in both XP and Vista that gives you all the info. about a MP3

file anywhere on your PC. This is what the screen looks like. Is this what you

are talking about ?

All I have to do is mouse over a file and this screen comes up with this info.

As you can see, it's from dbpowerAMP. A not very well known player but ,really

packs a punch I'll try and upload a screen shot of it :

That's in it's original skin. It looks like a very simple player but, in reality , it has all

of the options you could want including , renaming of MP3 files. It also seperates

from one another , just like seperate audio components. Here's another skin :

Not too fussy about this one but, it's different. The Menu comes up this way :

Click on any of it's entries and a screen comes up with whatever you chose.

It's a fun player that works great in Vista and XP. Don't know if it works in a

Mac though. Never really looked at that option.

If you're interested in knowing a bit more about it or trying it out , here's where

you can get it :

dbpowerAMP This is the version that you see in the screen shots.

Illustrate . Other products , some Paid For , others free.

It gives you the MP3 tag info AND lets you EDIT the MP3 tag info all in the Windoze Explorer. No need to go into a player for either viewing the info or editting the info.
