coastie. I don't think its a wide spread ....I'm still using IE7 with NO problem with Pcw site at all ......?

Then ...again ...I'm on Vista SP2 RC ....Don't know if It helps...

Hey sweetie !!



OK, now that you have IE8 , to get the IE7Pro back to where it's suppose

to be , you should first , Re-download a fresh copy of IE7PRO then,

goto Control Panel > Programs & Features > Delete old version (or the one that is there)

from your PC or notebook . RESTART your notebook and re-install the IE7 PRO plug-in.



DO NOT START IE8 OR ANY OTHER PROGRAM. JUST THE INSTALLATION PACKAGE FOR IE7 PRO.



When the security program asks if you should install or let the program (IE7PRO) install

a tool bar , say YES!!!, otherwise the little Icon will not appear at the bottom of IE8 .

The little Icon IS the toolbar so , let it install. This is what you should get after installation :

Once the IE7 PRO is installed , you Might get a "Protected Mode : OFF"

If this happens then Double Click on the "Protected Mode" . A window

will appear . At the bottom of that window , you will see that the check mark

is still in the check box. UNCHECK the check mark and then RE-CHECK

that box . Now Click on the APPLY and OK. Now close IE8 and Re-Start.

Everything should be in it's place.



MAKE SURE TO UNINSTALL THE CURRENT VERSION OF IE7 PRO.

This is because the previous version was a Beta and we always have

to unistall a Beta first. Once IE7 PRO is uninstalled PLZ re-start your

notebook. (this was just a reminder LOL !)

Hey, I'm glad IE8 is working for you. I usually don't complain, thus never bothered to report problems with IE7 to the authorities of PCWorld.
Since you Adama, were one of the first to welcome me here to this wonderful PCWorld community, It is with regret that I must say goodbye to all.
I ran into a irreconciliable divergence of philosophy and have decided to retire from PCWorld. Alas. But hey, it was fun while it lasted.

I did all those things before you posted this msg. And I did get the Protected Mode: Off thingy. But I freaked out and reset my UAC.

I must have uninstalled and reinstalled IE7Pro 4 times already, and still the same thing = the icon is MIA. The Ad-blocker option is working fine, it's just the icon that is missing.

I even went to the IE7Pro forum and checked out their threads. Seems a lot of people are having problems with IE7Pro and IE8. Anyway, I asked a question and I'll have to go back there to see if there have been any answers.

BTW, my brand spanking new IE8 has started crashing again - 4 times now - here at PCW. :(

Hi Flash!

Well I finally got my IE7 Pro icon back! YAY!!!

I went to their forum to see if anyone had answered my question, and a guy there had said to go to Tools, and then click on IE7 Pro Preferences from there. Then, he said to click on "Show wider IE7 Pro icon display area" and that should take care of the missing icon.

And it did!!! I had to restart Internet Explorer, and when my homepage opened up, my icon is back!

Then I told IE7 Pro not to filter this site, and not to filter the login page. So again, so far so good.

We'll see what happens when I go around PCW a little bit.

Hello Adama,

I have reconsidered my leaving this wonderful community; the irreconcilable philosophical differences weren't that um irreconcilable... Thus am glad to say that I will continue being part as an active member of our PCWorld online discussion forums and hope to further contribute and help others and also learn from others to the better extent of my capabilities.

May I sincerely extend my gratitude for your kind words and wishes; upon hearing of my hasty decision to leave (or face the possibility of being banned and showed out the door, and having to justify myself for posting controversial topics summarily deemed 'illegal'). Alas, you will find some of my posts edited with the reason illegal contents removed when in reality they are mere pointers illuminating the existence of commonly known truths on the Internet.

Discovery, learning and simple knowledge in itself cannot ever be bad or illegal. Doing something with that knowledge could be depending if you are the End User, or not.

But as most participants here are civilized self-disciplining members of our community, I believe the entire PCWorld community could lose its dynamic and interesting touch if our members have to walk on egg-shells worrying about what is permissible or not, or worry about being banned for sharing their honest thoughts. We must however pay attention to the Community Standards and play by the rules.

I know multiple and contradicting opinions abound. My experience is different under Windows 7 beta x64 and IE x64. It is simply the fastest. In all fairness, both Chrome and FF under x64 (64-bit) OS are mere x86 (32-bit) apps. I wonder why?

As far as on topic with this thread, IE8 x86 or x64 doesn't crash for me (yet). And IE8 as it stands under x86 XP, works just as fast as anything else. I don't know about the acid test, but don't really care. What I care about is the ability to accurately represent a majority of the web-pages out there I regularly visit. And IE8 does that job very well IMHO. I've noticed Chrome and FF truncates things and objects off the same fully represented website by IE8. But let's say that IE7 didn't work well on PCWorld and that is an understatement. Is it the browser's fault, or website? Hmmm, food for thought.

I'd not call its anybody fault ....As you better know ....every piece of pc out there is different ....."1 missed update ....then ...yours is not the same with mine...."

Not to mention all kind of hardware thats in it..... and all of all ...how you use it....

I still use IE7 and have NO problem at all with This site .....You see..."its just what you put in your pc....and how to use it..."

like you said.....(somewhere)....." The problem might be from the chair to the pc " ....Do I say it right ...? ...LOL....

It's all good.

My experience yesterday with IE8 under XP was horrific. After installation of IE8, the browser stopped working. So I called Microsoft Support 1.800.microsoft, they guided me through the solution over the phone. Within one minute of initiating the call, I was speaking with a support engineer. We skipped all the preliminaries, when I explained what I had done to debug the issue already (and that FF was working...).

1) run msconfig, checkmark the Hide All Microsoft Services, and disable all foreign services.

2) then disable all startup programs

Then IE8 worked as expected.

The rest I figured out myself, by re-enabling only the services and programs I needed. And now, instead of running 600~700MB, it only runs 330MB quiescent with everything I really need. And boots twice as fast! Neat uh?

Microsoft free technical support is #1 IMHO. And they followed through with an email, incident #, and all the courtesy expected from a professional organization.

Fifteen minutes later, I was completely running in IE8 with an optimized Windows XP to boot! The real bonus IMHO was to get rid of 50% of RAM consumption crap that got auto-installed by God knows who, from God knows where...

Speaking of which, contrary to appearances, I truly admire Steve Jobs as a legendary luminary pioneer.

If I were in his shoes, I would do no less. Thus totally understand, respect and agree with Apple and their way of doing things. The only things that annoy me are the partisan FUD and fallacies...

PS: Funny before calling tech support, I did some legwork myself on the Internet (incidentally using FF), and various technical experts explained if I ever installed a beta version of IE8, with SP3 installed, the only solution was to reload XP from scratch! LOL! Well I did install the beta, which didn't work, but wasn't prepared to cold-metal reload my workstation over that. I'm glad I called Microsoft instead.

Hey, I already use the latest FireFox 3.0.7. Especially under Linux and other operating platforms (Solaris, HP-UX, Aix ...)

And the above msconfig also fixed Google's Chrome for me! Yes, for some obscure reason, Chrome stopped working on my laptop a couple of months ago. But FF and IE were browsing just fine.

My suspicion is the Cisco VPN tunelling protocol stack virtual adapter, but I'll figure it out in time. Maniana!...

I only fix what's needed at the moment.

Glad all is well for you now. Did you find any differences between the previous version of

IE7 PRO with this one or is all about the same and are you still able to block those adds

and Flash ?

Hi Flash!

Actually, I am not really happy with IE7 Pro at the moment. Yeah, it's working well and yeah it's blocking the ads, etc., but I think it's causing a lot more problems than fixing them.

For example: Ever since I downloaded the latest version, I've had nothing but problems with PCW site. It's gotten to the point where even today I'm having Internet Explorer crashing again, and every time that I go to answer a post here, or try to go to a different thread, Explorer either crashes, or says it can't find the page!

So, even under the good all-mighty Internet Explorer 8 I'M STILL HAVING PROBLEMS! I have the feeling it is directly related to IE7 Pro.

A couple of days ago when I downloaded IE8 it was working at lightning speed, but I think it's because I had uninstalled IE7 Pro. Now I'm having humongous slowdowns again with IE7 Pro installed.

I know that you're using IE8 for right now, so how come YOU are not having problems with IE7 Pro?

Some time last year I did try WOT, but I had sooo many problems with it that I had to uninstall it. It was not compatible with Vista. Do you think that the new version of WOT will work well with the new IE8???

Soo many questions.... so little time... :(
