Remember that the AnnualCreditReport.com doesn't include a numeric score any longer, too. It includes an account of all factors affecting your credit score. In order to get that numeric score, a query has to be entered. Interestingly enough, such a query--from someone willing to pay--actually influences your credit. If you have a checking account, quite possibly you can get a free credit score through your bank. Other than that, it's generally held as "confidential". So you are actually back to a service similar to this; however, I seem to recall that obtaining the same information much more cheaply than that "Free" place...wasn't hard at all.

Actually, you were NEVER able to obtain a credit score thru annualcreditreport.com; however, with each request for a free report the sites (Trans Union, Experian, and Equifax) offered to provide one for a modest fee. The act of an individual checking their own score does not influence the score and in some cases multiple hits can be made before a score drops.
Also, you get what you pay for. People who use bank sponsored credit monitoring are more likely to know their actual scores than those who use rouge sites.

Remember to beware any time you hear,
"We're from the government and we're here to help you."
Freecreditreport.com offers a monitoring service as part of signing up. AnnualCreditreport.com does no such thing. One credit report a year is not sufficient to manage one's credit...IMHO
Perhaps you want to see how closing or opening certain accounts affects your score...easy to do with FreeCreditReport.com. Finally, as a subscriber to FreeCreditReport.com's service, I am here to tell you they have saved me some grief on my credit score. When an innocently unpaid hospital bill was about to be sent to collections and damage my credit, I got an alert and I was able to call the hospital and work out the confusion before my credit was damaged.
Freecreditreport.com is not a scam and I have to wonder about the government's motivations here. Nothing in our "legislation for money" bureaucracy happens to help the people...don't be naive.

There is nothing like the Libertarian to run around calling the sky is falling. Why people hate the government they elect is beyond belief. It is true there are bad people working there but as with any group one finds both good, mostly, and bad, unless we are discussing the Khmer Rouge or the National Socialist German Worker's Party, but they tend to out themselves rather quickly.

The Libertarian should read the Constitution. Most of the time, most of the government abides by it.They are not really out to screw you. However to turn a phrase, if you are paranoid, you do think someone is out to screw you.
