missing icons & thumbnails

last night when i was looking for pictures to upload to my photo site, i ran into problems

I booted into vista and i noticed that my desktop wallpaper had dissappeared (the desktop is now black)

and heres what it looks like when i browse for pictures

thats pretty annoying imo (if i change the views to either extra large or medium i can see the thumbnails) its issues with the large view (and it happens to folders in large view too)

any thoughts?
