Ever since I got Vista Home Premium, I have used the Snipping Tool to grab any visible part of anything on my laptop's screen as a graphic image I can paste into most any document. It's been a world of help when I am trying to explain exactly how some process should be done.

Now, somehow, the Snipping Tool has disappeared. I went to microsoft.com and downloaded a fresh copy of the Snipping Tool installer, which ran with no reported errors and produce a small executable file. Running it claimed to install the Snipping Tool, but when I double-click the resultant .exe nothing happens.

Anybody have any ideas? It's a drag having to make full screen shots with Esc-PrtScrn, then run them through PhotoShop to trim them down to the small segment I really want.

Thanx for any suggestions,

Al

Hi alpeabody and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

If this is a recent issue, and you have not installed too many applications, this would be a good opportunity to run a System Restore. Please note that System Restore will not affect any saved files. It will only reverse and system changes and application installations since the date you select.

Hi mphenterprises,

This is not a comment about the disappearance of the snipping tool but rather a question regarding snippit.

I've seen several members mentioning and also seen results of snippit. I have snagIt which is quite good but the only problem is the text sometimes does not show clearly and oft times blurry. All the snippits of pictures and text I've seen are very clear and legible.

My question is where can I find the snipping tool? I've searched in Download.com and Microsoft.com and even PCWorld....nadda. Where from can I download the tool and test it?

Thanks,

Yepperz

Hi Yeptzme. To be honest, I have no idea. Windows Vista introduced the Snipping Tool function and it has been a hit with just about everybody. The only application that I know that compares to it is SnagIt. Those who have Windows XP may be out of luck until some vendor creates an application that matches the functionality of the Snipping Tool.

See if you can manually load the Snipping Tool. Start -> All Programs -> Accessories and then Snipping Tool should be the 8th down the list between Run and Sound Recorder.

What are your system specs - Make and Model, or MB make and model if a customized machine.

How long has it been missing?

What is the name of your Anti-Malware programs and when was the last time you updated the databases and when was your last scan?

Have you added any recent programs around the time it disappeared?

IMO.... Faststone screen capture is the best.....USE TO BE FREE ....Now you have renew every 30 days ....

download.cnet.com/FastStone-Capture/3000-2192_4-10550327.html

Since vista has snip tool .....i don't bother using faststone any more.
